I have a void in my life that can only be filled with a 10mm bobtail commander. Problem is, I have scoured the internet looking for a used Dan Wesson VBOB to match my 9mm VBOB and can't find one. I even posted a WTB ad here.

So in my frustration, I have had an idea, probably a bad one, but its still an idea.

I am willing to use my DW Specialist 10mm Duty Treat as a donor gun, as it is still in production, and it can be replaced. I want a commander barrel and slide, and the frame bobtailed. Then refinished. Yes it will be a railed bobtail commander abomination, but it would be my abomination.

So my questions are:

1. Is it possible?
I have a specialist commander in 9mm, and just side by side of govt vs commander, the dust cover does not look like it would interfere.

2. If possible, who can do this work?
Reliability is my #1 priority. Accuracy is 2nd, fit and finish 3rd and turnaround time 4th.

3. Never attempted something like this before, what kind of ballpark cost am I looking at?

4. Would it be possible to fit the new commander upper to the lower while maintaining use of my govt upper assembly?

5. What else might I be missing? Feel free to volunteer any info, ideas etc. Or tell me it's not worth pursuing.

Thanks in advance.

No idea about the conversion - but you might consider contacting one of the semi-custom builders and seeing if they can build something for you. Ed Brown doesn’t catalog a 10mm currently but they have in the past and they do a lot of bobtails; Les Baer does offer Commander-sized pistols in 10mm so maybe they could build one with a bobtail for you.

Fusion Firearms.
The owner,Bob Serva used to own Dan Wesson.
They will make what you want.
I have carried either a Dan Wesson Razorback or a CCO model in 10 mm for nearly 20 years.
When I asked Bob about the custom CCO model, he said that sounds like fun, let’s do it.

As far as I know, it’s the only one in existence.

Bob sold Dan Wesson to CZ and moved to Florida and opened Fusion.

If you contact him, tell him Iggy sent you.

Dan Wesson did get back with me again. They did say they would customize my current DW. Just cant order a new gun from the custom shop. I am beginning that process now.

I almost bought the Fusion, just couldn't get over the laser engraving bear theme. Nothing has been in stock on their website for a while. I also considered reaching out to Fusion, but numerous complaints all over the spectrum have left me leery.

Don't know many smith's with books open or years waiting your turn.

Nighthawk will work on your donor gun.

Ok so Dan Wesson has said no, then yes and is back to no again.

Fortunately we have 2 local smith's in my area, one is reliable and one is not. The reliable one showed be a few 1911s he has built, including something very close to what I am wanting. He said 3 month turnaround time. Which I've heard he always quotes longer than it actually takes.

He sat down with me and we went over exactly what I want.

So a blacked out bobtail commander in 10mm is in the works. Can't wait.

Scratch build from Caspian. And yes, I was just using the cliff notes version.

Spats, I would love to be able to check out a Gun Crafter. But I am not on that level yet. Maybe next year.

This one will be non railed, as goal is CCW. Let's see how it goes and maybe a railed one will be next.

I was desperate to land a CBOB in the twilight hours when they could still be had NIB for $900... but the only one I could find was in 10mm. I didn't know much about the cartridge and passed. Still not sure that I would go commander length (or 1911 platform) for 10mm. To each their own.

Maybe give Fusion a call. Bob Serva is the guy that owned DW 1911 production 40 years ago. He's making great 1911s in Florida today.

I was hesitant at first, but barrel length falls between G20 and G29 territory.
