I was gonna say the 686, but then I saw "The Hole."

All of them are great handguns (and I have one of each) but my pick is the Smith Model 686. I saw the "hole" too but it doesn't mean that much to me; albeit, I'd rather not have it. Aside from value, it seems to me that the criteria for choosing one is which of them you'd have the most use for. A delightful "dilemma" indeed!

DH1633pm, a lot will depend on what you plan to do with the gun. Range use only, personal protection, hunting, etc. You also need to determine your preference of gun style and caliber. You have two semi-autos and two revolvers...which do you prefer.
1. I have a Delta Elite Gold Cup. It was my first 10mm. It is a hoot to shoot but it is mostly a range gun when I shoot it. I would love to have on in .45acp.
2. I have a customized Browning High Power that is one of my carry guns. It's accurate, has never jammed and is also a hoot to shoot.
3. I have never owned a S&W 686, but I do have a 3" Ruger GP-100 in .357mag that is another one of my carry guns. I really like that gun.
4. If have a 7.5" Redhawk with a 2x handgun scope and a custom 4" Redhawk that I crafted from a 5.5". Both are in my favorite caliber of .41mag. I have hunted with them both and the custom 4" is my field carry gun. I had originally ordered a Redhawk when they first came out in .44mag, but the gunshop owner accidentally ordered the .41mag. I took the .41mag instead and began my love for the caliber.

I chose the 686 because I would shoot it the most, it's good for the range and plinking and SD, and so on and so forth. Yeah, nothing is more useful than a medium-frame 4" 357.

But as the other poster said, with moderate use the Redhawk will be there for your kids to pass down to your grandkids.

I guess that's true of the 686, too, if you mostly shoot 38 special and 44 special out of them both.

I am going to choose the winner of the poll. The transfer can be done when I get back from my next business trip. Leaving Saturday for Munich.

You are pretty astute. Keep in mind, I may not do much with it. Won’t take it hunting. Any of them. I usually don’t carry. I appreciate your comments. I have tree 9’s already and a 1911. I also have a revolver. The choice really is even up since I really had the choice of 13. The includes four PPK, 1903 Colt, Luger and other nice pistols. The four are my final choices. The ones we always shot.

I voted Browning High Power…not having read the thread….the 1911 would depend on the mods (having now read the thread - the mods are benign), the 686 and Redhawk are current and pedestrian…

then I realized, I have the Gold Cup, 686, and the Redhawk…

I stick with my vote

I am sure that which ever one you choose you will enjoy since it came from your Dad. That is a very personal choice/situation.

Poll is closed but what the heck I’ll answer anyway.

I’d pick the Colt as long as the mods don’t include something like a 1 lb trigger. Then the Smith, then the Ruger. BHP is last, as there’s a reason I got rid of mine (several really).

All a mute point now. My dad got a bad diagnosis while I was out of town. Learned this upon my return. My deal with him was I get to pick one after I get my permit. Hence the choosing. Today he gave me all 15 of his pistols. Might transfer them this weekend. I have shot everyone of the 15. I think the only one that I never enjoyed was the Contender. But he did. All that matters. Included are die’s, components, ammo, powder, and 28 long arms. Will take a while to sort them all and make room. Still want to thank everyone. I will shoot the 45 tomorrow. I am at my dad’s staying the night. Cold yesterday with a high of 18 and high winds. Today should be better.

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad received a bad diagnosis.
This is a reminder that it makes sense to give some of your firearms to those you care about while you can enjoy watching them using them.
Special prayers for your family.

I was always close to my dad. I like what you said. And thanks. I have been busy this last year giving away more things. In modern times we have too much stuff. How much does one really need? Gave away two rifles and a shotgun last year. And not hand me downs. Unissued M44 Hungarian, Thompson Compass with a worked trigger and replacement bolt handle, and a Beretta A300. And about ten knives. All new. Plan on giving more than a few away this year.

Very sorry and saddened by the news about your Father. Try to make the most of what time he has left and remember all of the good times you had together.

A day doesn't go by when I don't think about my Dad.

Prayers sent and may God Bless you and your family.
