270 win the best?

It’s good! Best?

Depends...
It can be over powerful in many instances.
I actually prefer the 7mm08. It’s equally powerful, but more efficient, compact,
Ditto the .257Roberts... just not quite as powerful; trajectory of a .270, but energy of a .30-30.

My vote is for the .257Roberts, though I own 2-.270’s...

The Bob kinda falls apart the further you go out though. Wind can blow it inches fast and it's looses punch. I'd prefer a 2506 which I give number 2 for whitetails. Still such a great cartridge, a shame it's not more common.

It serves its purpose, it’s a great round, but I’ve never loved long actions. Perhaps that’s because by the time I started shooting we’d already seen improvements in efficiency. We can do more with less.
Anyway between the .308win family and the WSMs, make mine a short action. (Exception being the intermediate mauser family.)

East or west of the Mississippi? The .270 a terrific medium to long range deer option. For eastern whitetails there are many outstanding alternatives. Think: .243, .30-30, .35 Remington, .444 Marlin, .257 Roberts, .250 Savage, .350 Legend, .300 Blk, .458 SC.
Oh how I love my 250 savage. Inside 100 it's just a death ray. But it's just no Bueno at 300 the best deer cartridge should getrdone well past woods distance.

.25/06?

Sorry, I reload for my .257.
Uses same bullets as .25/06. Only 70-100fps difference in muzzle velocities. Not a significant difference except I use 5-7gr less powder.
I’ve shot prairie dogs at 400+yds with the Bob. Mule deer at near 400yds. Never felt handicapped on deer.
I’ve got better elk cartridges/rifles than the .270. But, question was deer!

There is no replacement for displacement! I actually prefer a 7mm to .270, and .30 to 7mm. But for elk, not deer...
I don’t own a .25/06. But best friend does. His 120gr loads are slower than my .257’s!
But I do have a .257wbymag. It’s a great “bean field gun, but not something I’ll carry/hunt with all day. It weighs 11lbs! My Bob weighs 7lbs.

That bobs a bad dude. Efore biden I could find 2506 on the shelf at walmart and yea the fps is minimal but the 270 is as well with a 13o grain and better SD. ID LOVE TO GET A 257 if I find a nice one I'll likely pick it up. Ruger #1 would just be perfect.

Here's what's kind of funny,

My dad had a Remington 760 in .257 Roberts when I was a kid, he used it to hunt deer. He said he couldn't hunt elk because it was too small. Then in the summer of 1985, he tied enough flies to trade with the local sporting goods store for a Smith & Wesson (Howa) model 1500 in .270. And he was like; "NOW I can hunt elk." Ok.

I now have both rifles and handload for both of them. I seriously have to wonder, (even THEN,) what he thought the big difference was between the two, what a .270 would do that a .257 wouldn't? I think that I would use either for elk, but at the same time.....why not use the heavier cartridge just to make sure?

I feel like the 270 win is the best deer cartridge period, change my mind.
Nope!.... and Nope!

Theres nothing the .270 does better than a 6.5CM, 7-08, or a .280Rem, or a 7mm Mag, or a ......any number of small bore reasonably fast rounds.
Those happen to be favorites of mine, and I think they're the best thing since sliced bread..... Does that make em the best rounds ever, or even better than the 270 Winchester or 308 Winchester, both of which I don't care for? Nope! And certainly not to somebody who likes the 270 or 308.

Really depends on how it's loaded, I just finished a Mauser build on a small ring 98 that's pushing 115s at 2950ish...im actually backing that load down a grain or so, which will likely end up just over 2900
If I get around to AI in this thing it should easily break 3K....
Heck I had a long barreled 250 AI to drive 115 to 3040.

Even though the BC's are relatively low on 257 bullets, That's plenty straight enough for anything. I'm going to take a shot at.

Equally I can load a 280 AI or 7 mm Remington Magnum up or down to duplicate or exceed the 270 Winchester, recoil differences are minimal. Cost increase is also minimal at least for me since I hand load and my most expensive components are powder and primers at this point.

I’m not going to try. Lol. It’s a great cartridge. I also love the 25-06. I’m rebuilding a 250 savage, and currently own a 308(as in I need to pick it up tomorrow) I’ve shot deer with all of these cartridges. Mean 100 gr nosler hand load in 25-06, 130 Sierra handload in 270, 150 in 308(working on handload for that). 250 savage is being rebuilt because of the very slow twist rate that has issues stabilizing even 100 gr bullets. The 90 gr I shot out of it caused several whitetail to rest comfortably in the deep freeze before being happily digested by the family. I have a big soft spot for the 270, but it ain’t perfect. That said, across the board, no substitute for straight shooting.

You are absolutely right. And anyone trying to change your mind is foolhardy. It is the perfect deer cartridge… for you.

270 wouldn’t work so great for people in States that require use of a STRAIGHT WALL cartridge though. Also wouldn’t work for those who like Short Actions. You see, the cartridge one chooses for their own criteria IS the perfect cartridge.

The 270win is ok and even better if your name is Jack and Winchester is providing you with all the ammo and rifles to hunt with.

Ok, I got my jab in!
I would prefer 308, 30-06, 7mm-08, 280Rem, 280AI, 300wsm, 300wm , 7mm Rem Mag, ext...

I feel that 7mm Rem Mag is better.
1) More energy
2) Better trajectory
3) More bullet mass
4) Larger diameter (bigger hole in/bigger hole out)
5) Good availability of rifles and factory ammo. (Most deer hunters use factory ammo)

Before you come back with a recoil comment. Remember energy on the back end equals energy on the front end.

Ps: enjoy hunting with your 270 :D it's a good cartridge.
