Does Anyone Use A 270 Win.

I bought a 700 ADL .270 in 1972 and used it for everything I didn’t use a rimfire for. Took my one elk with it in 1984. Started using a 6.5x55 in 2012 because I wanted less recoil. Still use the .270 on the occasional Nilgai. I have a 30-06 but the .270 works fine on Nilgai even though neither is enough for Nilgai according to the experts. I use factory ammo, 130 grain Corelokts even though that seems to be passé too. Has a Walker trigger too. Never messed with it other than having a gunsmith lighten the pull in the early 80’s.

I don't own one now, but have owned 3 or 4 over the years. A 77 Ruger was my go to gun for several years. It's scorecard when I retired it was 22 whitetails, 2 mulies, 2 pronghorns, a bobcat and a turkey. I pulled off 3 of my longest shots with it. Now I have found a couple of rounds that give me similar performance with less recoil and less powder.

Solid scorecard

I had one for about 18 hours. I bought one cheap off a guy who needed quick cash for the rent and sold it the next day at a gun show for a profit. But that doesn't mean I don't respect the round.

In 1975 I'd saved up enough to buy my 1st centerfire rifle and was torn between a 308, 30-06 or 270. I drove over to the home of my scout master/teacher/football coach to ask his advice. He only said, "follow me." We went to his shop where he opened a footlocker and pulled out about 10' of military surplus 30-06 still on linked belts. Told me when I shot it up to come back for more. At 17 having an almost unlimited supply of 30-06 ammo made the choice easy.

But other than that, I don't think I'd have gone wrong with any of the 3. In fact, I've since moved to 308 for most of my hunting. I never doubted the 270's capability. I just couldn't justify owning 30-06 and 270.

I had that relationship when I was a kid too!

“You don't hear much from us 270 guys cause we're out hunting while the ones shooting the latest and greatest cartridge are on their computers talking about how great their new rifle is.”….

Bwahaha how true!!! It’s becoming one of the elder statesman of the deer woods/prairie/camp/swamp/whereverelseyoumighthunt. I’m a mid-thirties guy who learned from the old school…

We have about 4 different 270s my experience is limited to the 22" barrels. It is pretty much automatic on deer. I do get quicker kills with a 24" 270 WSM. The WSM really thunders the valley though.

Nothing wrong with a relatively light 24" 308 shooting warm 165 gr. loads. or 150gr. solid copper.

Hmm. Had to go thru all the posts here on .270 Win to get a reading. I like the .270 Win a lot. Had a 1964 Sako Finnbear that was/is possibly the most accurate big game rifle I've ever owned. Utterly reliable and a pleasure to carry. I no longer hunt, so, it went a good friend in Idaho who uses it still. The .270 Win is a excellent round. Antelope, deer or elk, It gets the job done.
