The idiots at the shotshell companies apparently think if we cannot get or afford many 12-ga target shells then we must want fast 1-1/8 oz in what we can get. I have not seen many 12-ga target loads for sale, in Cabela's, Sportsman's Whse, Walmart or any of the smaller stores, in the past year, and what was there was all 1-1/8 oz, most at 1,300 fps, which is impossible for a small kid to shoot for very long without a Gracoil, Soft Touch or similar recoil reduction device.
If they can reload and reloads are allowed in your program, that will enable the 12-ga shooters to have sensible loads. Otherwise I would tell the parents to buy a 20-ga gas auto if at all possible. It has not been that difficult to find standard 7/8 oz 1,200 fps 20-ga target loads.
