Reloading scales

I’m pretty sure that this subject has been talked about before, and that this may be the wrong venue, but if so I just can’t find the right one. My old scale has gone bonkers and I want a new one. Problem is that I want to buy US if I can find it. I have searched the internet to find which scales are ACTUALLY made here in America, but it appears that the information must be top secret- an excellent example is trying to find out where Frankfort scale products are made. Brownells lists some of their cleaning materials that are US made but not the scales.

So, what I’m looking for is a list of reloading mfgrs. that make US Products or a place to find that information (if it exists). I haven’t decided on a powder scale yet (but I’m favoring Frankfort) because that piece of the data is still missing, and I want an American Made (not American Based) item if I can find it. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just did a quick web search. RCBS has the parts made in China and assembles their balances in the US. Lyman and Hornady says that their balances are Made in the USA. Maybe you should email them.to double check. I'd look up Lee but I've read on previous threads that their balances are so-so.

I have a feeling knowing the customer base is likely a flag waving 'merican, if it is made in the US it will say it.

And remember made in the US, and assembled in the US from US sourced components is just not realistic in todays world. Something is going to come from somewhere else.

An item like an electronic scale is very likely going to have "stuff" in it from someplace else.....and in some peoples eyes that alone will make it not all US made.

Depends on where you draw the line.

We have a global economy, it just isn’t practical to buy only made in the US nor does that ensure you’re buying a good product. A cheap strain gage scale is a cheap scale no matter where it’s made. The best are Analytical like Satorius then come down to milligram scales like A&D fx120i or older tuned Beam scales.

I just sold a 1980s vintage Bonanza scale on eBay. If you really want a USA made scale, that’s a great place to look. Redding, Ohaus, Lyman, Hornady, RCBS, all of them made in USA back in the day. Good luck to you—they are out there! I found a vintage Ohaus 505 for myself.

Morning all. Just my nickel's worth, I have been using a 1976 RCBS 510 balance. I recently started casting a 600 grain .513 PP bullet. I needed a scale with greater capacity than the 510. An internet search on EBAY found an Ohaus 1010 for $165. It was delivered and I am very happy with scales. The 510 is a touch quicker to balance than the Ohaus, but the Ohaus seems to be more precise.
Thank you

Made in the USA first, then Taiwan, Germany, or Japan. You can go ahead and buy Global without caring but I’ll do it my way - thanks.

I appreciate the helpful comments. Thank you all, and I WILL buy American made, even if I have to go back to a balance beam method full time. My old RCBS still works.

Two of those counties declared war on the US just 80 years and killed millions of people during their quest, but they are OK ?

Who said I didn’t care ?

This is all I said.

I'm guessing that you are looking at digital scales? What about a Pact? I think they are made in the USA, or they were.

I don't believe we ever had the manufacturing capability of grain style scales stateside... you can easily find an old beam made here... I'm kinda the same way, try finding a quality fishing reel made here at home. I have expanded my support to nato countries like Japan because I had to. I take every step I can to avoid China and the other countries that hate us...

Well if thats your outlook, you must be terrified going past Indian reservations :) .... just trying to be funny.

I recently bought this on eBay to replace one that got broken when moving years ago. Very happy with it.

What kind of scale went bad, you make it sound like it was something other than a balance beam scale?

Was it a digital?
It was a Pact digital that I purchased years ago (mid to late 80s) and the YouTube post about err1 (and my brochure) didn’t fix the problem. But then again I have moved coast to coast 3 times in that period and I figured getting it fixed would probably cost more than a new one. So it now rests in the landfill.

Hi again folks. Finally settled on (and bought) a Frankfort Arsenal that sounds like it will do nicely. But when I am loading for accuracy or hunting I use a RCBS balance beam. For plinkers and general loading I use the digital - it’s faster. Anyway, thanks for those helpful answers.

Once you have children you learn that omission of information is the key to knowing the whole story. If your having a hard time figuring out where the product it made, it’s because they don’t think that’s a selling point and could even be seen as a negative by some.

Those that do mfg. in the USA are generally pretty proud of the fact and you don’t have to search for the information. Like the front of this catalog, for instance.

I do have one of their scales but I never liked using it, gave it to niece a long time ago now. She had never used any other scale so she has never had a problem with it.

I am like the old 5-0-5 and 10-10 scales but the last ones were made in China. They still had the, made in New Jersey USA part on the bottom in the casting with a “made in China” sticker (easily removed) on the bottom too. They were of such poor quality they dropped the line and started new ones. So you would want to avoid one of those.
