I have some Rage Hypodermic broadheads that I came across. They are the regular (non-crossbow) broadheads marketed for regular bows. Is it possible to use these with crossbows or do I need to buy crossbow-specific broadheads.

A cursory internet search suggests that you can use the with crossbows, but people talk about using orings and dental bands to prevent premature in-flight opening. I am new to crossbows and archery in general so I am not sure what they are referring to with regards to orings and dental bands. Any explanation or photos would be beneficial. Thanks!

I have used the same Rage Hypodermic broadheads with both compound and crossbow. I have taken 3 deer with the crossbow and the broadhead past through clean each time. Mine have a black band holding the blades in the forward position and then the blades lock back as it passes through. The band usually slides up the arrow shaft and could be reused again.

Rage hypodermic for regular bows have rubber bands that hold the blades shut until they hit target. The "designed for crossbow" Rage hypodermics have a mechanical slide that opens the blades on impact.
You can use regular broadheads on most crossbows, but when you get up near 400fps its probably good to upgrade the bands or just use the ones meant for crossbow.

Thanks for the replies. I’m using a Wicked Ridge RDX400 so I just got the Rage Hypodermic Crossbow Broadheads. Im sure the regulars would work fine, but also do not want to risk a premature opening.

I'm not a big fan of mechanical broadheads.
IMHO the bands break or come off in your quiver.....etc.

I shoot a three blade monolithic like montec.
I found one in the field I was planting yesterday.!!...as a matter of fact....same as I use, but not mine. (At least someone agrees with me!)

There is a new style that doesn't use bands, I've got some on the shelf I haven't used yet, but can't remember the name. I'll post a link when I get home and look at them again.

I’ve used both mechanical and fixed for my crossbow. I liked the idea of the mechs for POA/POI with my practice points but then I found Ramcat fixed blades and they work perfect for POI/POA with field points.

I have both of these and haven't tried them yet, neither used collars or o'rings, they have a mechanical locking system and deploy on impact just like any other expanding head. 20220612_133614.jpg

Not a fan mechanical broad heads for my cross bow. One of the reasons is they are not practical for target practice. I like to practice with the same broad head I use on game. Slick Trick broad heads fly well and are very accurate.

The Thron mechanical broadheads I posted earlier have a collar lock to prevent the shear pin from being sheared and deploying that allows you to practice with them. They shoot to the exact same POA/POI as my field points.
