Ya it definitely kicks less then I would have thought. They were warm loads and 147s. Factory with 143 should be pretty mild, or load some 120-130s. With that stock design it would be very easy to add weight, bet 10lbs of shot would fit in the butt stock.
Brings up a good point......you can always download a larger cartridge, but you can only push a smaller one so hard.

don't like the way the 7MM mag kicks, but I'm a wuss, so don't mind me. The recoil is sharp vs the .308. If I want flatter, don't need it, but if I wanted it, it wouldn't be 7 Mag.
I’m not a recoil fan either. I’ve experienced enough 12 gauge slugs that my days of heavy recoil are gone. That said, my Browning 7 mag has what I would consider moderate recoil, certainly nothing I’d consider severe. As always, stock design, overall weight, and particularly the recoil pad are more important than caliber IMO.

I think my uncle’s .270 kicked more than my 7 mag. It was light, had a metal butt plate. I strongly detest .270’s to this day.

I have definitely had some painful 12 gauge experiences. On one range trip, I fired around 60 full power 12 gauge rounds from a Benelli, which also had too long a stock for me, so a lot of the recoil ended up being transmitted to my right bicep. The next day my bicep was so swollen I looked like Popeye!

I wouldnt mind another 308 in the least bit, nor would i be opposed to 7-08, 270, 30-06 etc. Just curious to see what others are suggest to maybe open up my mind a bit. Unfortunately dont handload so need to stick with more mainstrean stuff.

@jmr40 Is on point. Mainly looking for something with a little more class than my current ruger american. Nice quality, accurate, dependable, and well nice looking rifle would be a plus.

Being that my ruger is a compact with a short LOP and a 18" barrel , im looking for a nice quality rifle with a 22-24" barrel, and a standard/adjustable LOP.

My rational beheind the 7mm mag was its a good bit flatter shooting, has more oomph behind it and seems like a really nice all around shooter without being overkill for deer. But honestly im not picky and maybe a mag really wont be the route to take, good points made.

I'm gonna pop My $0.02 worth of advice take it for what it's worth . Having been very fortunate in MY life ,I've had the opportunity to Hunt on #5 Continents . #3 Guns I've always taken 7mm RM , .308 and 375 H&H as required . The 7 hits with authority and is 99% effective under 500 Yd.
given one chooses the correct bullet for the task at hand . Ammunition readily available ditto with the other two calibers and that can be critical but another story . Yes Belted Mags kick more but a single trigger pull NEGATES any recoil regret ,IMO .

MY 7 will reach 1K yd. reliably but I'd NEVER even consider shooting anything while hunting at that ridiculous yardage and NO ethical hunter would . So reality is 20-500 Yd. 160 gr. traveling a tad shy of 3K fps is gonna DOWN whatever it impacts .

Because I have so MANY 156 gr. .284"CuNi hunting bullets of European origin I shoot them their BC isn't great but they do the job .

I've owned this Commercial 3K L Mauser since 1965 and it's NEVER failed .

Bottom line VERSATILITY . 120 Gr.-175-180 Gr. their BC .320- .652 Wild to Mild and a weight and design to fit near anything .

I strongly recommend my Tikka T3 in 7-08. In my opinion it is a fairly big step up from a Ruger. But if you want a bigger step up look at a Sako. I switched to the 7-08 for less recoil and it is plenty for my max range of 440 yards. Before that I had a Remington 700 BDL in SS 7MM mag. I bought it for Elk. It was very accurate and would kill at ranges beyond what I would be willing to shoot. In the same class is a 30-06. I personally don't see the need to go bigger that the 7-08 or .308. Lots of choices but look at ballistic charts. As an all-around combination it is hard to beat a Tikka T3 in 7-08.

Hey guys, havent been around here much the past year or so, nor have I purchased a new fire arm in nearly 2 years so the itch is something fierce.

As of right now im leaning towards a new all around bolt action for hunting. Would like to keep the rifle itself around $1000ish or less. I dont't NEED one i just WANT one.

A little background, I live in upstate NY and deer hunt in the thick stuff. My go to deer rifle is a ruger american compact .308 with a 2-7 leupold on it. Its short, the short LOP is handy when wearing a backpack or in a tighter stand. Its a great brush gun, that im not afraid to hunt hard with. Super easy to maneuver around thick second growth with. Honestly its perfect for my current hunting needs.

But im looking to pick up a nicer/higher end rifle in case i end up hunting some fields or maybe one day a western elk hunt or something when the kids are finaly out of diapers and off of formula no draining down the bank account LOL...so maybe one day. So i figured get a nice rifle that cam handle the task and become familar and comfortable with it over the next couple of years. Nor to mention it would be nice to have a second bolt action incase something was to happen to my ruger american.

This past winter i was able to snag a vortex viper HS 2.5-10x44 for $250 new from Midway. So i have a nice optic to put on the rifle

So id be interested in hearing some suggestions or rifle/calibers. Prefer this one to be synthetic/stainless or coated rather than blued. Wood and blued is beautiful and timless but im looking for practicality. The savage 110 storm has my attention. I like the idea that it wont need to be bedded and the stock is adjustable to fit. Thinking maybe in the 7mm mag flavor.

What do you guys suggest?
I would probably try to find a Mossberg Patriot and then buy a case or two of ammo and call it good. And you already have a decent scope for hunting purposes so that's already good to go. If you don't have rings, I'd recommend the Vortex basic rings as they have held up on my 270 Patriot just fine. Mine will put all shots in dang near the same hole and sometimes in the same hole if I do my part, and that's with factory ammo.

I own two Savage 110s and a few barrels, it's how I get down. One is a 6br I average in the .3s with a repeater action. It leaves the door open for many options. I use shilen barrels and recommend them. If you like hunting brush 338 federal is your huckleberry
.338 Federal would be my huckleberry if I didn't have to handload for it. And by me I mean another round my poor overworked old Dad would have to handload for. I've already got him out in his garage before sunup like in a Dickens novel handloading for the two dozen other calibers I had to have. Why so little love in the industry for the .338 Fed? Even the .358 Win seems to be holding on better.

If I had to guess, lack of well suited bullets and not enough difference between 308 and 358 to bother needing to split the difference.

If you're gonna go bigger than 308, might as well step all the way up to 358.
