Yes sir, you could get a decent AR for about $950, nothing too fancy though. I doubt that you could get something in a larger caliber (for hunting) for that price...that is what you want it for right?

If I got an ar it would be just for target shooting / competition maybe , I already have a low end hunting rifle if I needed to use it if I did get an ar, for $950 can you find any ar with removable handle? Like a dpms m4 or those carbine versions a little bit more?

A flat-top, sure can. You aren't too far away from an low end AR-10 from DPMS.

You said you wanted a gun accurate enough for target shooting but light enough to take to the field. The SPS Tactical sounds like the way to go. It's very accurate out of the box, but isn't as heavy as longer-barreled tactical rifles like the 10FP or 700P.
