Im currently in the market for another rifle Last week I posted about looking for a semi auto but I changed my mind and I think I want a bolt action rifle my budget is around $700-800 Im looking for something that I can take hunting/ use for a bench gun when i just want to do some target shooting I have been looking at a few rifles here are the ones i have been looking into. This price is not including a scope I will buy that separate i can wait till I get a nice scope

Remington Model 700 ADl .308
Remington Model 700 SPS tactical .308
Tikka t3 Lite 7mm08

Can i get anything better for my price range? I was just looking around locally and those are some of the rifles i saw, i would order from somewhere if i can get a better rifle

have you budgeted for optics?

if not I'd strongly urge you to buy a $400 bolt action and spent the remainder on QUALITY optics and mounts

I kinda Budgeted the Remington Model 700 adl in .308 I can get that and a nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 for the amount of money im willing to spend, That includes bases/rings. how would that set up function? for texas white tail deer hunting and 200 yard target shooting (my range is only 200 yards max)

I hear the new winchester model 70 ultralights are nice for around $700. Think they are made by FN in the US.

I second the M70, it is a beautiful rifle and shoulders well (at least for myself). Just try (at least shoulder) several before you commit to buy/place an order. :)

I'm a HUGE fan of model 70's from any time period, but your Rem 700 you mention would be an excellent choice.

I have been looking at a CZ550. Though of your picks I would take the Tikka. I have a Remington 700 SPS and I am not too happy with it. I enjoy shooting it but its not something that I say, "I sure am glad I bought that rifle."

Optics wise, I have been looking at a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40.

So,
CZ550 - ~$600
Zeiss scope - ~$500
One hell of a rifle.

But Nikon's are great scopes so are Bushnell Elite's

Look into Savage.

If you don't reload put your money in your pocket for now and buy some used reloading books at your local gun shop.

Good luck.

I would vote for the ADL of your listed choices. If it were me, I would buy a CZ550 and put the leftover towards optics.

A stainless, synthetic Ruger Hawkeye is in your price range and a pretty good all around gun. Probably the most rugged and dependable rifle made and more accurate than most on the internet give them credit for.

They are heavier than I like as a hunting rifle, but at $390 the Weatherby Vanguard has to be the best buy in a bolt rifle right now. They are available in stainless for about $150 more and that would save you money for better optics or ammo.

If you can find one under $800 or if you are willing to pay a little more there is nothing classier than the new Winchester Featherweights. It will be a rifle you will be proud to pass down to your grandkids.

Don't get me wrong STOCK 700s are great rifles but if you really do decide to bench shoot one they'll be outperformed by the tikkas, weatherbys, and savages.

all can be had for ~700 bucks

What are the differences between the adl and sps models ? They look identical except the sps has a drop floor plate. Is the adl just as accurate ?

Savage offer anything in .308?

I have both the Tikka T3 in .308 and the Winchester M70 in 30-06. The Tikka is by far the best value for the money of the 2 rifles.

The only 2 things I do not like about the Tikka is the cheesy plastic magazine and it is very hard to load from the ejection port. Other than that, it is perfect right out of the box.

Is .308 the right caliber choice for my intended purpose of hunting Texas whitetail, feral hogs, and paper punching at the range. I'm also considering .243 or .270 I had a .30-06 I just have a bad flinch with that much power I'm still new to shooting. I appreciate all the help this is a huge investment for me I want to get something I can be proud of

I was looking at the CZ 550 also, until I read about the new accu stock from Savage. I think I am going to go in that direction.

I'd say a new model 70 featherwight or an x-bolt.I have both and I really like them.

I have a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in .308. Lot of gun for the money. I think it is as accurate as the 70 or the 700. A .243 would be fine for Texas white tail but I couldn't tell you much about hogs. I would imagine a .308 wouldn't have a problem with hogs though.

I have had my Tikka for just shy of two years. It is a tough, reliable, accurate rifle that should put food on the table for years!

That Marlin XL7/XS7 has gotten nothing but fantastic reviews from every source I've seen. It's $300. It made Dan Petzel's top 11 most accurate rifle list for 2008 - for $300!!!!

I second the Marlin XL7 or XS7. That will leave you plenty for a quality scope/rings.

Tikka T3 in 7-08 u will not have to do a thing to it...just mount a scope break it in and tryin keep the big smile on your face from swallowing up your ears after u shoot it.:D

how would that remington 700 adl in .308 mounted with a nikon prostaff 3x9x40 work as a "quality" hunting setup? im not looking for a tack driver i just want something higher end and that will last
