Want 40S&W handgun - Suggestions?

Other two options could be the Stoeger Cougar 8040 and the Grand Power P40 but I think they are not easy to find used.

Since you already have the 9mm PPQ, you can search for a .40 PPQ but I don't know the price for a used one.
The Walther P99 AS .40, the S&W SW99 .40 and the Magnum Research MR40 I suggested are all of the same Walther P99 AS platform as well as the Canik TP40 V2, another good pistol.

Police trade-in Glock 23 or 22.

The market had been awash with Police Trade in 40's. Its seems to be thinning down a bit now a days. I have seen Sigs, H&Ks, S&W and plenty of Glocks. Most will be the full size models with a few compacts thrown in. I would pick one that you can still find mags for at a reasonable price. Make sure to pickup the extra mags while you can. It seems that once they are gone it takes some looking to find more.

I have a S&W 40VE that I picked up cheap. That one I would say stay away from. It has the worst trigger that I have ever pulled. It may be just the one I got but it soured me on them.

I'll +1 other recommendations for a LE turn-in. I have an MP40c that is my CCW. It's great, super manageable, and with a 9mm barrel, converts to an MP9c. Still for a 40 and in CCW it's awesome. My second recommendation would be Springfield armory XD40. With the 4 inch barrel, it's not as easy to CCW, but it is very accurate. Plus, it handles some spicy loads while maintaining accuracy. My last recommendation would be a Glock 22. It is great as all my other LE purchases, but when compared to the SA and M&P, I can feel it in the hand more. Accuracy is great as well, and with a 9mm barrel converts easily to a G17.

HKP2000 is one of my favorite semi auto pistols
SW Shield (for CC). Chambered in 40, it barks and recoils more that the HK due to it's lighter weight but not and issue for me.

Buy a Glock 20 and purchase an aftermarket .40 barrel for it. The aftermarket barrel is optional. A shame about 40 losing prominence. It's a great service pistol round.

That's a good idea. I"ve only ever thought of 40 S&W to 9mm. Question, would you be able to go from a 10mm barrel to a 40 S&W barrel, then to a 9mm barrel? I've got the Glock 22 which is a 4.49 in barrel which is the same length as the 9mm G17 barrel. Those however are 4.49 inches. Assuming aftermarket has a 9mm 4.61 inch 9mm barrel for the Glock, would it work on the G20? I'm assuming if it did, that it would probably require a spring change out. Curious.

Anyone considering this definitely needs to handle a G20 first and not just assume that any prior experience with a Glock in 9mm will be instructive. I don’t mind the size, but many people with less-than-large hands find the grip way too big.

Yeah I'm one of those folks who put hogue grips on my 2nd gen Glock 20 so it would fill my hand.

With 40-9mm conversion barrels and Advantage Arms slide kits, you can shoot cheaper 9mm/22LR for practice yet put the 40S&W barrel back in for HD/SD.

Just as the plandemic was kicking off, I ordered a Gen4 G22 police surplus. At that time, they were $279, and it arrived looking 99% new and wearing night sights.
It quickly became my favored home defense pistol, even though I initially bought it more as a range toy.

I’d go for the 229 in .40. That was my plan a couple years ago, but this was next to the 229 in the display case. The 226 in .40 came home that day. A couple months ago a 229 finally made it home.

I just sold my S&W M&P40c with night sights, Apex sear, manual safety, and in like-new condition for $399 through my local gun shop. It sat on the shelf for two months, but someone finally realized what a gem it was.

Funny, I paid $266 for it through PSA a few years ago brand new. Great little pistol but just didn't fit my hand properly.

I have a 10mm and a .40 caliber Grand Power P40. I've shot the 10mm extensivley, great design. I picked the .40 up on Gunbroker a few years ago for a steal ($380 including shipping), and it came with 3 mags. I put a few mags through it, works great. Not sure what I am doing with it yet, I was (and may still) contemplating sending it out to have the barrel reamed to 10mm.

Try one of the new Gen5 Glocks in .40, the slide is thicker than previous versions (which were same as 9mm) but not as thick as the .45/10mm models. The recoil is noticeably less in the Gen5 Glocks than previous generations, so much so that when I shot my Gen5 .40's beside my Gen5 9mm's, there was very little difference in recoil. And accurate! All three of my Gen5 .40's (G22, G23, G27) are tack drivers.

I have the 9mm Grand Power Q100 and love the way it shoots and the different recoil impulse.

If I were you I would not modify the chamber of your .40 S&W P40. I would rather sell that pistol to buy a P40L in 10mm Auto instead.

I have two pistols in 40 a Glock 22 and a beretta Px4 I like the Px4 way better except for the safety it is softer shooting and Way more accurate for me in rapid fire

H&K USP has been my favorite .40 for quite a while. It remains my only 10mm Kurz and that's okay.

Pop the dentent out of the lever and it becomes a decocker only

My G35 is one of my 1st or 2nd favorite Glock. It's got LPA fiber optic sites but is stock otherwise.

Glock 35. Gen 4 if possible.

If I knew then, what I know now, I'd never have bought a 9mm. Instead, I'd always look for the 40s&w alternative. Buy that, then buy the 9mm barrel.

That's pretty much what I do now.
