I'm new to handguns and am looking to buy a 40s&w. It's between a S&W m&p 40, XD 40, Tarus 24/7 or a Kimber KPD. Out of these 4 I have yet to find a gun shop that has a KPD in stock to play with and i'm not sure I like the long trigger pull of the tarus but I could probably get used to it if people think it's more reliable or a better all around gun. All I have is a 22LR revolver that I play with and want something bigger. Any info. will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Take a look at the FNP40 while you are out there shopping. A quality pistol for a very good price.

All you mention are fine, except I've never seen the KPD and don't have an M&P. See if you can find rentals to try before you buy. Don' overlook the CZ guns or the Taurus PT-100/101.

I wanted to buy a handgun in 40 cal and I also wanted to buy one in 357 SIG. So I bought a Glock 31 in 357 SIG and all I have to do now is buy another barrel in 40. It is a simple switch out of barrels and I will have a gun that I can shoot two calibers out of. 357 for defense and 40 for cheap plinking ammo. Just wanted to give you another little option to ponder while you shop around.

The Kimber is DA only, the M&P are striker fired, and the Taurus is DA/SA. Of these, I prefer striker fired in that they have no need for a manual safety and the trigger pull is reasonably short and consistent from first shot to last. I prefer the handling of the M&P to that of the XD - it's less top heavy and blocky feeling.

Given the choices, I'm partial to the M&P. But you really need to pick each one up and handle it for a while to see which feels best to you.

TLH, first welcome to The High Road. Of your four listed choices I'd go with the M&P if fits your hand well. I'm not familiar with the KPD; its scarcity and unknown parts availability would make me avoid it. The M&P is backed by S&W's lifetime warranty and a large established network of S&W certified armorers & gunsmiths throughout the US. Longterm warranty and service support add a tremendous amount of value to S&W products.

Welcome aboard. My first gun is a .40S&W caliber and I still love it.
I'd suggest you try them out first and be keen on ergonomics and flawless function.

Good luck with your decision!

SIG P229. Oh that wasn't one of your choices sorry. I would have to go with the SIG P229. :D :neener:

Actually of your choices I would go with the XD. I am not a fan of polymer Smiths and its not just the Sigma that left a bad taste in my mouth. The KPD is well, not exactly what Kimber does best, Taurus is very hit or miss with the quality control and that leaves the XD which is a very good gun. The only thing you want to make sure of is that you get either the two toned model or one of the newer models with the "tennifer like" finish called melonite.

Also Beretta

Also have a look at the newer Beretta PX4 (Storm) pistol.

Available in .40 S&W (14 rds).

Of course, if we HAVE to color inside the lines, then I'm partial to the XD 40 (I have the 4" service model).

The XD shoots better than I do.

I just picked up an XD-40 Service on Tuesday and took it to the range last night. Its a great gun. I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about it.

first and foremost i love the .40 caliber, and i own 3 .40 handguns. i don't however like the way some makes and models in .40 ie. glocks. it just seems to me that they are a little excesive in the recoil department compared to other guns of the approx same size and in .40 this is personal preference, glocks are great but i will stick with the 9mm models. even my kahr k-40 little as it is dosen't seem to be as hard to shoot and i can shoot it comfortably all dyay long which isn't the case with the glock 22, 23 etc.

These are the .40 pistols i like in order from most to least, just a few and by no means all of them out there.

sa xd
h&k usp
sig
glock

btw i have 2 xd's and i love them, they are great shooters and eat anything. accurate to.

just wait till you get some more trigger time with it. it gets better and better. btw congrats!

Thanks

Thanks for all the info and advice. I think I narrowed it down to the XD40 or the M&P40. I went to Gander Mountain and looked at them. I liked the trigger pull and how they fit my hand. One more question though. When looking at the XD website it mentions that some models have V-10 porting. What is this and is it a benefit? I can't find anywhere that says on Springfields web page.

Thanks

the v10 is there ported model, basically they have slits cut in the slide and holes in the top of the barrel that allows the gases escape out the top which assists in lessining muzzle flip, however i have not had aproblem with the muzzle flip in either one of my xd's, but i went ahead and put in a dgr and #22 recoil spring and it made it even easier to shoot.

i am not whole without my glock... the xd and mp are good choices but the m&p hasnt been out long enough to prove itself while you cannot buy parts if they break on either, so a week or longer of downtime (which i hate) the m&p mags are pretty expensive xd is half the price, on the ease of taking down both are the exact same, lever in the front, i think an xd would be a better choice but i would still put glock as #1 for me, trust me before i got the glock i was in the same boat your in, and as for changing calibers xd has 40 and 357 but the glock has 9mm (conversion bbl) 40, and 357 and the mags are cheap and parts out the @$$ and you can get .22 conversions, value: if you do sell it xd and glock would probably be around the same price
heres a quick list if you dont want to read
XD:
Pros: cheap, reliable, accurate, 2 caliber conversions available
tough finish, and great warranty
Cons: no parts available, no aftermarket mods (as of now), the mags are 2-5.00 more than glock mags (if u go to the right place) not the easiest to work on (my friend made me take a crack at his)

Glock:
Pros: its a glock :D jk, carried by many many cops, utterly reliable, parts every where, 4 different caliber conversions, cheaper mags, lots of custom parts, great people at glock they will fix anything wrong, and a good finish
Cons: higher chance of a kB, and factory plastic sights seem to fall off after a while.

I have the XD 40, it is a great pistol. It si easy to dhoot, handles great and has proved reliable so far.

SIG P229. Oh that wasn't one of your choices sorry. I would have to go with the SIG P229.

Actually of your choices I would go with the XD.

+1 and +1.
I have the Sig P229 in .40 and the XD-40.
Like them both, but I prefer the P229.:)

40Cal, 357, 9mm, All in one

...

I have to agree, with those that said, P229R Carry in 40cal.

You can later switch just the barrel (buy) and have a 357sig.

And, switch to a 9mm barrel (buy) and a Sig 9mm double-stack magazine, and you have 3 guns in one.

I can tell you that my Sig P229R Carry 9mm is pure joy.. especially with the CT grips (laser grips). And if I consider my Sig 229 Carry a Peach, then the 40cal Carry must be a Daisy..

But if you look at my signature below, you can see the order of guns I own, one pending, and that my first choice, was the Beretta Px4 Storm 40cal. She's my Italian Beauty, like a perfect sized, weight and balance, Italian woman.

I do love it, no regrets, none..

And I'm gonna top-off my gun collection, after I get the Sig P220R Standard, with a Beretta Px4 Storm 45 cal. Full size like my 40cal, late this year when it comes out.

Note: both the Beretta 40cal, and the Sig 9mm are perfect size for CCW with IWB holster.

The P232 is my wife's gun I bought her.

And, the slide action, manual hammer draw, from DA to SA is smooth, along with trigger pull weights, in both the 40cal and 9mm mentioned, along with both Beretta and Sig are SO easy to break-down, in the field, or when you get home, to clean. VIP IMO.

Remember: Beauty (how it feels in your hand/grip) is in the eye of the be-Holder.. (and you like what you see)

Enjoy your gun journey ahead..

Howdy and welcome! I'm not here very often, but these are a good bunch of guys with a wealth of information to share.

I own an HK USP .40F; and I am partial to HKs. They have never failed me- always reliable, always accurate, and just plain handy!

I have recently gone over to the .40 side, having been a .45 and 10mm fan for the most part, and am pleased.

Like what most have said so far, I'd probably steer clear of the Kimber, simply because it's not that well circulated. It is though, basically a M&P, or so I've heard. The XDs are awesome guns, but I want the .45 real bad. Also look at the Glock, also excellent firearms.

If your going to get the M&P then go for the one without the magazine safety please, unless it's really important to you. Not partial toward XD's at all. Some others have hinted at Glocks, so will I. They do everything an XD does but better.
