Better?

Well, that's one person's opinion ...

Here's another;

Get an XD. It's quickly proving itself to be a very worthy defensive piece, and with VERY few negatives.

The "NOT-A-GLOCK" option , you might say! :)

Advice, worth what it costs...

The SW40F has served me well for decades...well, close. The vaunted M&P is, IMNSHO, a SW40VE in 2006 polymer.

I've read post after post of Sigma-bashing. I would advance that most of the posters have no experiences at all with the weapon, and simply parrot what they've read a post somewhere...usually by another person who has no actual knowledge or experience with a Sigma.

With older Sigma police-trade-ins selling for around $225 with a couple of hi-capacity magazines, it seems a good place to start. If you decide you don't like .40's or polymer or the action, you can sell it without loss.

S&W has a great warranty, I also like the Sig & HK in .40, Kimbers are great but expensive and I wouldn't waste time on a Taurus considering you're also looking at a S&W & Kimber.

Another vote for the S&W M&P. I have a 40 Compact and I'm totally thrilled with it's performance, amazingly soft shooting in .40 caliber. I makes a great carry gun. Small and potent with good capacity (11 rounds). And with Smith's lifetime warranty and superb customer service (fast & they pay both ways!!!) you can count on S&W to repair or replace their products, if necessary... for life. Definitely check them out.

I saw no one here mentioned a baby eagle in .40. All steel gun, well built, trigger not the greatest but that can be fixed. It was my first handgun, This gun is very accurate and feels good in my hand, I have medium sized hands. I will never sell this gun it's one of my favorites. Give it a handle at your gun store, I believe other people here have given this gun favorable reviews.

M&P, particularly if you have any question whether you like the feel of the Glocks. I haven't shot a Glock. Bash me if you want for not liking a gun because it shoots nice, but doesn't feel right in my hand. With the selection out there, no one needs to own a gun that doesn't fit their hand. Most of the ones that have been listed here have little to no problems with their current production models. The only difference between a Glock and everything else, is that it's been out longer and has cheaper replacement parts.
I have fired the XD-9c, and it is a nice shooter. I personally didn't like how high it felt compared to my M&P40. Your results may vary.
The M&P is nothing like a Sigma. I'm not saying the Sigma isn't a good gun. I have one, and with the exception of cheap ammo, it's never failed me. I think Smith could have done better to give it a softer, more grippy, grip, and to lighten the trigger pull. Also, the unsupported chamber makes reloading dicey.

The M&P is steps above a Sigma, there's no unsupported chamber issues, you can shoot lead all day long with no worries(compare to H&K poly-barrels), the ergos get wide-spread kudos, the trigger is just about right after a short (150-200rounds)break in, with option to lighten if you want to send it out. Should you ever need Smith's service, it's top notch. And the price is better than most of it's equals.

Try them all out and pick what fits your needs. Life's too short to have a gun you don't like.
