I posted a few months back about joining the CZ club late in life. Starting with the 75 P01 9mm, I really liked the way the gun sat in my hand. A Cajun Gun Works springs/firing pin set made it a much smoother shooter, rivaling the best I could do with my plethora of Glock 9mm’s from the first group I shot, and improving with each range session.

I then went for a CZ 75 D Compact. Same great feel in my hand, same great trigger after the CGW improvements. This gun isn’t as accurate in my hands as the larger P01, but it is a good shooter nonetheless. A poster on THR predicted a CZ 97 would be next, and the poster was right.

Today I picked up a newly-bought CZ 97B from the FFL. For whatever reason no one around here could find one so I went to Gun Broker. I found a seller with multiple 97B’s listed, with auctions ending every three days. I kept getting outbid and losing until the others who wanted one were satisfied, my winning bid (after losing four straight) was almost $100 less than the sales price of two of the first ones I had bid on earlier. Sometimes it pays to be patient.

The gun had an out of the box trigger that was OK, but my experience with CGW kits made me order the set and a stainless guide rod while the gun was in the 10-day waiting period penalty box. (I also picked up two CZ branded magazines from Gun Mag Warehouse as well.) After picking it up today I dropped in the springs and firing pin. I must say the DA (8 lbs) and the SA (4 lbs) trigger pull is fantastic.

While I haven’t shot it yet, I do have several initial likes and a couple of concerns that I hope will be answered when I get to shoot.

I like the metal grips and torx screws compared to the rubber grips and cheesy phillips screws on the 75’s. The metal grips feel good and look so much better. :)

The barrel bushing was a piece of cake to take out, much easier to do than the one on my Kimber 9mm 1911. That gun NEEDS a wrench to loosen the bushing.

The ergonomics rival the 75-series, which feel to me like CZ took my hands and designed their gun around them.

The sight picture is as good as the 75 series guns, fiber optic inserts of red and green make picking them up easy.

Of concern is the long-ish trigger reach in DA mode. I am lucky that my hands/fingers are pretty strong so there is no issue today, but years down the road when I start to get diminished strength the short-reach trigger will probably be in my future.

SA trigger reach was easy. Plenty of trigger finger is available for shots.

Second concern is the magazine release. The button isn’t very pronounced so my right thumb cant push it with much strength if I don’t adjust my grip. I watched a M*CARBO tutorial on the 97 today, and the guy working on their 97 said he is planning on an extended release for sale. I hope to get one if the guy comes through with the idea.

All in all I am pretty stoked ti finally add this piece to my set. Once I get a chance to shoot it I will post how it does to this thread.

Stay safe.

You must have purchased the last one. Pistol looks great. I am eventually get one myself. I shot the CZ75b on Saturday. It always shoots well. I have been thinking of the CGW's mod's for mine too. Glad you found them to be such an improvement.

^^CZ still makes them for the California market, just different grips and front sight.

The CZ 97b is my favorite .45. All the information I've seen say's the production by CZ has stopped on these. What's out there is out there and no more. Watch the price sky rocket. Mine is stock and will stay that way, I liked the way it shot out of the box. It cost me $800.00 (I almost always get burned) and now I'm very glad I boight it when I did.

Sportsman’s Supply must have listed 15 of them, I got mine for $740. Other final prices range from one lucky lowball at $691 to a high of $1,125 (for a different Ca seller) and a max of $1,190 for someone who probably overpaid. :what:

Mags were about 85 bucks for two, shipped.

Today has been a crappy day; lost my wallet at the gas pumps about 10 (someone found it about an hour later and turned it in!), wife just texted that she had a blown tire from the car in front of her smack her lexus and knock stuff off the front end.
Man, I want to go shoot!!

Stay safe.

This thread needs more 97s!

If you really like the 97, I highly suggest a trip down to Louisiana for the E-mod. The 1911 bushing is worth every penny. It simply outshoots my DW 1911s.
The trigger in DA can be addressed in a few ways.
Cheapest route is replace your current recurve trigger shoe with the 85 combat shoe. It's flatter in shape and brings the trigger reach back slightly.

The best route is a reach reduction kit from CGW. It includes a new trigger, 85 combat and a new disconnecter. This physically moves the trigger back.
You can see the difference here.

Personally, am not a fan of Mcarbo IMO they offer nothing but low hanging fruit.
David at CGW spent a ton of time, money and effort advancing CZ pistols. Without CGW, it's my opinion CZ without be enjoying its fan base they have.
With that said, CGW offers an extended mag release. Its nothing but a SP01 release ground down.
The pistol on the left has this extended mag release.

Honestly, I would just modify the frame and run a shadow 2 mag release which is the pear shaped release. Your P01 has the pear shaped release and is swappable with a S2 release.

I also run extended slide releases on all my CZs. The 97 can use the SP01 slide release.
Although not a 97, it has the SP01 slide release and the S2 mag release.

I’ve heard about the SP01 magazine release button swap. That may be the route I take.

Ok, took two 1911’s (SA loaded .45 and Kimber Stainless Target II 9mm), the CZ 75 P-01 and 97B, and the Ruger Mk IV .22 to start off with.

B30E1A6D-BEAB-4D51-A549-ED151F10F7A8.jpeg

After I shot about 100 rounds through the Mk IV, I started shooting centerfire with the CZ 75. This was the first magazine I fired at 10 yards. Standard B-27, two-hand standing, nothing fancy. I threw two, all my fault.

4205E416-AA1A-429C-8E25-81BD2F0A7918.jpeg

I fired a few more magazines between 10-15 yards, similar results. Easy shooting and boringly reliable with WWB 124 gr fmj.

Time to christen the 97 with WWB 230 gr fmj. First ten shots at 10 yds, My DA first shot went a tad high, all the rest SA shots fell in nicely.

ADD936A4-953B-42CA-A893-FD9689A88C44.jpeg

Using the same target I fired a second magazine, also at ten yds. This time I focused on the DA first shot and it stayed where it was supposed to. :)

I beared down after shooting more shots. I took my time and put together some good shots on my last blue-red B-27. (I like these because the ten ring is highlighted and you can see hits easier with the indoor lighting.) 7 yards was pretty nice.

27BA1C14-4EA3-42F8-90C6-DD7573F87DC4.jpeg

I added a dot sticker, moved it out to 15 yards and tried to duplicate the other group. Oh well, not even close. :)

It was fun swapping the CZ’s for the 1911’s. Certainly different grip feel, trigger feel, etc. makes it challenging to keep shots in the good spots.

I shot about 350 .45 and 9mm rounds today, My only issue today was one failure to feed with the 97 later in the day. The 8th shot of 10 wedged across the chamber mouth nose-up in the magazine. I fired 2 more magazines full with the same magazine after this FTF, it didn’t reoccur.

Cool gun!

I am glad to have finally checked the CZ 97 box, I waited so long that almost missed out. I am very disappointed that CZ has discontinued the 97B, I guess sales weren’t brisk enough to sustain production. It was one of the few high quality DA-SA .45’s that we can get here in Mullah Newsom’s Californistan, now they’re going to be rare birds here indeed. :(

Stay safe.

To “CZ” or “Not CZ”..?

The decision is easy.

Were I to be offered a choice of several gun brands which were unfamiliar to me, from CZ I would buy literally “sight unseen”, or whatever the correct expression.

My PCR - due to its high quality And ergonomics- has outlived most of my other (also) high quality handguns.

If you like the aluminum grips, you will really like the LOK Bogie grips!! Much improved, especially if you shoot in hot weather and your hands start to sweat. Mine has the E bushing mod, CGW straight trigger, SA only, floating trigger pin, comp rear sight, LOK grips:)

we showing off the 97B.. got my last month for $550 used and I kinda messed it up. But Still LOVE IT

hold on!!! Pic coming

I think I’ll get it milled out and a CGW a new bushing. mabey optic cut too
The 1911 bushing Chevelle posted looks like a good option.

A question for you 97 owners; Does the 97 bushing have to be super tight, or can it be snugged finger tight? My new 97 stops in position for the guide rod plug to hold the bushing in place a bit short of needing the bushing wrench to turn it further. ( I don’t want to bear down and over torque it if i don’t have to.)

Thanks!

Stay safe.
