I posted a few months back about joining the CZ club late in life. Starting with the 75 P01 9mm, I really liked the way the gun sat in my hand. A Cajun Gun Works springs/firing pin set made it a much smoother shooter, rivaling the best I could do with my plethora of Glock 9mm’s from the first group I shot, and improving with each range session.
I then went for a CZ 75 D Compact. Same great feel in my hand, same great trigger after the CGW improvements. This gun isn’t as accurate in my hands as the larger P01, but it is a good shooter nonetheless. A poster on THR predicted a CZ 97 would be next, and the poster was right.
Today I picked up a newly-bought CZ 97B from the FFL. For whatever reason no one around here could find one so I went to Gun Broker. I found a seller with multiple 97B’s listed, with auctions ending every three days. I kept getting outbid and losing until the others who wanted one were satisfied, my winning bid (after losing four straight) was almost $100 less than the sales price of two of the first ones I had bid on earlier. Sometimes it pays to be patient.
The gun had an out of the box trigger that was OK, but my experience with CGW kits made me order the set and a stainless guide rod while the gun was in the 10-day waiting period penalty box. (I also picked up two CZ branded magazines from Gun Mag Warehouse as well.) After picking it up today I dropped in the springs and firing pin. I must say the DA (8 lbs) and the SA (4 lbs) trigger pull is fantastic.
While I haven’t shot it yet, I do have several initial likes and a couple of concerns that I hope will be answered when I get to shoot.
I like the metal grips and torx screws compared to the rubber grips and cheesy phillips screws on the 75’s. The metal grips feel good and look so much better.
The barrel bushing was a piece of cake to take out, much easier to do than the one on my Kimber 9mm 1911. That gun NEEDS a wrench to loosen the bushing.
The ergonomics rival the 75-series, which feel to me like CZ took my hands and designed their gun around them.
The sight picture is as good as the 75 series guns, fiber optic inserts of red and green make picking them up easy.
Of concern is the long-ish trigger reach in DA mode. I am lucky that my hands/fingers are pretty strong so there is no issue today, but years down the road when I start to get diminished strength the short-reach trigger will probably be in my future.
SA trigger reach was easy. Plenty of trigger finger is available for shots.
Second concern is the magazine release. The button isn’t very pronounced so my right thumb cant push it with much strength if I don’t adjust my grip. I watched a M*CARBO tutorial on the 97 today, and the guy working on their 97 said he is planning on an extended release for sale. I hope to get one if the guy comes through with the idea.
All in all I am pretty stoked ti finally add this piece to my set. Once I get a chance to shoot it I will post how it does to this thread.
Stay safe.
