i know neither of these are the gun you are asking about, but..... i used a IMI Baby Eagle to go through the police academy, it accepted CZ75 mags so i am assuming the grip angle has to be somewhat comparable. i found it to be so wonderfully ergonomic that i recently (17 years later) sold my Glock 23 to buy a CZ 75 P-01 sight unseen. i had never even seen a P-01 in person and i sold my G23 to order one. when it got here, i knew i had made the right choice :) this gun is amazing. i shoot it atleast once a week and tend to hold it, when i'm not shooting it. it is my everyday carry piece.

the beauty of the P-01 (which you might wanna consider) is - i can't tell if it is a big gun or a small gun, when i hold it. it doesn't have that dainty 'ez to carry no fun to shoot' feeling. just the opposite, it feels like a real gun, solidly built and range ready. but at the same time, you can tell it would conceal really easy (and it does). it's just the perfect size. everything about it is awesome. anyway..... i know you didn't ask about the P-01, but it IS a CZ and if the others are anything like it, you can't go wrong with any of them :)

The Baby Eagle is a semi-clone of the CZ design, based on the Tanfoglio copy. Tanfoglio makes the parts. Many folks feel that the wonderful CZ ergonomics are done just a bit better in the Baby Eagle.

The P-01 you mention is a COMPACT-framed version of the full-sized 75B with a decocker. It's also alloy-framed, rather than carbon steel -- and noticeably lighter.

The SP-01 has a larger magazine. The standard CZ 75B mag and the mag for the SP-01 will fit in the P-01 (and Baby Eagle), but the P-01 mag won't work in the SP-01, as it's too short. The P-01 mag Won't work in your Baby Eagle, either, if it's a full size gun.

Witness-based "compact" mags won't work in the P-01, as they're a bit shorter than the CZ compacts. Be careful when looking for inexpensive mags.

(And, believe it or not, the ProMag mags for the 75B Compact in .40 are very good. About the only ProMag I recommend. If you can't find or afford Mec-Gars or Mec-Gar-made factory mags, those specific ProMags are a good alternative. Many, many CZ compact shooters have used those mags with good success.)

CZ Clone

Hello guys,

Went to the local gun show today with every intention of buying a CZ-75 if I could find one for the right price. I did not find exactly what I was looking for.

However, I did find a poly Tanfoglio Witness in .40 cal., hard shell case, 2 bore brushes, rail, and 2 high cap mags, NIB for $310 out the door. Seemed like a really good buy to me...so I bought it. Pretty nice looking piece. Slide seems a little stiff and fairly heavy DA pull, but it is brand new and should loosen up some.

Just wanted to ask for some opnions on this purchase. Oh, and by the way, the frame has "Made in Italy" stamped on, and the case is lime green with Tanfoglio marked in large white letters. This is not an Armscor product

Good-enough guns. Generally, they have good triggers, shoot well, and you can get parts and some support from EAA's/Witness's customer service. (That's both a plus and a minus.)

Kind of like a Ruger, in that they're reliable and durable.

You'll probably like it, shoot it for a year or too, and then look for something a little better. The price is about what you'd pay for a similar Witness. A good price, but not uncommon.

CZ-Clone

Thanks Walt, I appreciate the feedback.

Went to the range today and ran 200 rounds thru it. One ftf. I was using Federal 180gr. FMJ. Really flat blunt nose round. DA seems a little heavy. SA is really nice. Pistol points really well. Very good ergonomics. Take down is a little different than what I am used to, as there is no dedicated take down lever. This may be common to all CZs and their clones. You guys would know better than me as this is my first CZ-75 type pistol.

All in all I'm pretty happy. Gun seems to be very well built. Looks like it would handle alot of use and abuse. The finish is very nice, kind of a flat black look. Anyone know what kind of finish is used on these?

Thanks

Gunner

When I had my Sport Long Slide, the DA trigger started out rough. I dry-fired it (DA) about 200 times a night for a month or so, and it became very, very smooth. The SA trigger was always good. You'll probably fire yours from SA (cocked and locked start) once you get used to it.

You may have a "wonder finish" which is really a surface hardening treatment under the painted finish. I've never heard what the black finish might be. Everyone who works on them, however, say the metal itself is very hard (and difficult to machine.)

Wonder finish is OK, but I had a boss who had a Wonder finished Witness 40 years ago, and he had a horrible habit of resting his arm on his gun while standing up. After only a day or two it started to eat through. Of course, this guy's sweat was like sulfuric acid, too.
You should be happy with it, good solid firearm.

Do you mind saying where you live in iowa? I also live here close to Waterloo iowa in the town of independence if you want you could always shoot my CZ 75b to give you a fell for them if your close, but I will warn you once you do you will have to own one.
