From left to right: (1) the stock Hogue, (2) the G10 Pirahna Hogue, (3) the G10 Pachmayr, (4) the Diamond Pro Pachmayr, and (5) the Rogers Enhanced Grip:

The original Hogue is comfortable to shoot, for me I can get half a pinky on there so it works. I don't think I could shoot it comfortably with my pinky curled below. I also found that I drew better with all of the larger grips.

I like having that extra pinky but the G10 Hogue felt slippery to me. Even with the Piranha texture the upper back and sides felt like I couldn't get a solid grip there. Otherwise the size seems perfect. It's significantly thinner than the Pach's below. Feels like the right form factor, wish it came in rubber or a grippier G10.

The Pachmayr G10 did not feel slippery. It is pear-shaped, it gets thicker at the bottom which is a little weird but not a bad grip for me. What's weirder is how heavy it is, feels like there's a weight in the bottom of it. Still it was comfortable. The fit was a tiny bit off, but they include some adjustment tape which didn't seem to do much.

The Diamond Pro. Same pear-shaped form factor as Pachmayr's G10. But this one doesn't feel heavy. The rubber under the trigger guard is a little floppy. Only bothersome if you notice it imo. Generally not as tight around the top as the stock rubber grip but I'm not sure you'd notice unless you were paying attention. Not as tacky as the Hogue rubber.
Edit: These do come all the way up to the Hammer Pivot Pin if you push them on harder than I did here. It is a bear to get off.

The Rogers Enhanced Grip is the only plastic one. Interesting form but it felt too light to me and slippery.

At less than 14oz the LCR is a great pocket carry option.
Pocket carry is really the only reason I have one.
For that reason I went with the bantam grips. (A hair over 13oz with them)
This isn't a range gun for me, just one of convenience. PXL_20220918_024955630.jpg

Nice comparison. I tried a few and went back to stock on my lcr.

Agreed, nice comparison and commentary from nugi.
SeanSw like you after trying a few ended up back with the stock factory Hogue. My wife has an LCR and opted for the full grip Hogue Tamer. They come standard on the 3" versions, but we picked one up for her LCR snub from Hogue.

my younger son has the ruger lcr 38 with standard grip for a ccw in an owb kydex holster. he is a tall, in-shape, guy but now has some shoulder & wrist issues from the army, and really doesn’t like shooting it. does the hogue tamer really tame the lcr’s recoil?

Can't fairly compare because her LCR is 22LR. Her reasoning is she just wants her entire hand to hold onto the grip, doesn't like the pinky hanging off.

In reality both Hogue grips have a small rubber piece inside that cushions the grip. There might be a small reduction with the entire hand absorbing the recoil but can't say definitively. I can say this definitively, if he uses 148g wadcutters the experience with the 38 LCR will more tolerable. Quite a difference in felt recoil.

Thank you for this! I really love the stock grips on mine but occasionally think of others. Sounds like stock grip is still the way to go.

Mine is a belt gun but I can shoot it well out to 25 yards (DAO even) so for me it's a primary. I shoot it better than many fullsize guns.

Is this the "Tamer"? I can't control the 38 special LCR with factory grips very well. I think these longer ones used to be stock on the LCRx.

I can shoot it just fine with these grips, and they help it stay put in a cargo pocket.

That's it, the longer version of the Tamer that comes with 3" LCRx.

Hogue calls then: Tamer with finger groves, Tamer w/o finger grooves.

nugi thank you for this excellent comparison thread. I'd recently changed over my j frame grips to hogue g10 piranhas and was looking for similar for my LCR. The stock grips work fine once in hand but are too sticky from a pocket, for me. I found the boot grip more easily drawn from a pocket but is so short, and oddly it feels like it's trying to squeeze out of my hand due to shape. Every time I try it I end up putting it back in my parts box. I will probably try the piranhas once I can find them for a reasonable price.

Great comparison! How are the rubber options for pocket carry. Other than looks the main advantage of wood, effortless draw from the pocket.

I'm not very experienced with pocket carry but the rubber Pachmayr seemed noticeably easier to pocket draw than the stock Hogue which seemed to stick in the pocket.

Thank you good information!

The Guardian grips with the pop-down pinky rest are nice on my Taurus 856 - and they make them for the LCR as well. Conceals like the bantam grip, shoots like the larger grip, and is hard plastic. They are light and not sticky. I like them.
