Yup, it's real. Yup, we shot it live in an artillery competition last weekend. Win? Hardly, but the Order of the Blind Squirrels finished 3rd. Gun is a 6lb rifled howitzer, aka "Pack Parrot" a small piece designed to accompany cavalry in rough terrain.

We recycle our rounds. Keeping them in small groups makes the cannon ball retrieval much easier.

Dang accurate shooting. How far away are the targets?

Target was 100yd. For a size reference, the gun is a 6lb howitzer so the bore size is about 3.5in so you can gauge the size of the targets by the size of the holes. Bullseye was about 4in and the card suites are about the same. We were shooting late afternoon and the rear has a Hadley eyecup that was a bit too small to admit enough light to see the targets clearly. Even though I was on the worm and brush, I did take a moment to look through the sights as we prepared to pull the string again.

Our shot string went- first to 12oclock, correct aim second to 6oclock, reset gun and then 12oclock again (discovered problem with main rear sight), reset gun aim with back up sight bullseye, reset gun, 4 ring, reset gun bullseye, reset gun 4 ring. Move to card target. Heart- hit. Spade- miss reset, hit. Diamond- hit. Club- hit. 1 spare shot left, grins and giggles, aim at 12 on bullseye, hit. So between the Hadley and the main rear sight problem, we did ok. Were it not for the main rear having issues, we'd probably have shot even better. In the target pic, we're digging out the rounds for recasting.

Yeah, cannons are great fun!

How deep do they bury into the backstop? Any idea of the velocity you’re getting? Very nice stuff, thanks for sharing this!

No idea on velocity but at our NC backstop of red clay, they're in anywhere from 2 to 4 feet. The deeper figure is when subsequent shots hit in the same hole. The rounds generally aren't hard to find as they'll leave a tunnel most of the time. Sometimes dirt from other rounds will help cover a tunnel but if the observer is on the job, it's not hard to find a tunnel with a probe.

That looks like a lot of fun. Just curious, what sort of powder charge per shot?

About 1/2lb. That's not a full service charge. As bad as the muzzleblast is with that, I'd have to think it gets apocalyptic with a full charge.

How are these targets scored? On the bullseye for example did the ones at the top count before you re-sighted?

It's five on each target for score. Once you hit five, no more count. We are allowed 12 shots per match so there are several shots we fired into the bullseye target that don't count. We had our score set on it after we confirmed the sight issues and fired all our allowed scoring shots. We moved over to the card suit target and fired 5 more rounds for score. There were two rounds left at that point we deliberately shot at 12oclock after the observer had scored our target.

I once saw a 30 pound Parrott Rifle fired with a blank charge of 3 1/4 pounds of powder(standard service charge). Talk about apocalyptic. It shook the ground when it went off. I can only imagine what a live round would have been like.
