Got hooked on this essay, great info for black powder shooting.
Just bought a new Winchester 73 in 44-40, (I know they are Japanese made) seemed right to have the Winchester name on the barrel, and for 44-40, it had to be a 73.
Are you going to cover the gun cleanup method that works for you?
I used to shoot subs back in the day, getting ready to try the real stuff.

Am shooting bp .44-40s in an original '73. I use a shot brass from that gun to seal the chamber for the first stages of "sloshing" out the barrel.

Sorry, it has been quite a while since I updated this thread. I seem to have solved my problems with Photo Bucket, knock on wood.

Yes, I do intend to talk about clean up.

Also, loading shotshells with BP and I will touch briefly on loading for single shot cartridges such as 45-70.

By the way, I love this subject. I load paper cartridge .54 Sharps, 44-40, 45Colt, and 45-70, all exclusively with black powder. I’ve cleaned my BP firearms with warm soapy water since about 1976 but yesterday I received an order of Ballistol to try. Not so sure I like the smell of Ballistol.

I used to use the mixture of hydrogen peroxide, Windex, and Murphy's oil soap. seemed to work well for Pyrodex, but I know a lot has been learned since then.
I also used to put a popped popcorn wad in the case under the bullet, probably not practiced now.
Plan on learning the big gun loads for my Sharps and 76's after I master the main match calibers.

I used to shoot it for the enjoyment, but work comes with it. if you want your firearm to remain in good condition you must do the work. I have gone to mostly all smokless powder for my enjoyable shoots and mostly only use black powder too hunt with.

This is a tough one. I know there is a web page out there with photos showing that a charge of electricity cannot ignite grains of Black Powder. I have seen the photos many times. The idea is that the coating of graphite on modern Black Powder grains creates a conductive surface for the electrons to flow over, without creating enough resistance to raise the temperature high enough to ignite the powder. Some shooters are so confident that Black Powder cannot possibly be ignited by static electricity that they use the plastic bottles on their MEC shotgun presses to contain the powder

I have to often remind these fellows that the graphite, which is an added process AND does cost the powder-house money, is done to drastically reduce the chances of the powder granules being further broken down and turned into fine dust (I also remind them that grain doesn't explode but grain elevators with fine dust in the air, DO ) So there must be a reason they do this treatment to the powder, as well as there must be a reason why people working in the Italian fireworks assembly houses walk around attached to a ground as they work. Further I have to remind folks that lightning IS static electricity and was known to destroy powder magazines from time to time. The idea that they miss is that the commonest forms of static electricity, the cat, your wool socks as you walk across a carpet made of man made fibers, probably won't touch off commercially made BP. However, IF you decide to dabble in home-made BP, or for some reason you end up with crushed BP, or you have something other than a normal static discharge... that graphite might not be such a guarantee as folks believe.
