I am having problems with a model 66 I purchased, so S&W sent me a fedex prepaid stamp thing. One problem: it says "declared value: $100". This gun is worth 5 times that. Should I send it this way? I am really nervous sending a gun if it is not fully ensured. What would you do?

Call S&W, or call fedex, I'm sure you can pay a couple extra dollars and insure it for $600. Or maybe S&W is willing to replace it should it get lost and thats the minimum fedex will allow it to be insured for (the default). Call and ask.

Call S&W. They will confirm exactly how they want it shipped. Last time I talked to them, they indicated that they knew what they wanted done and would stand behind any delivery failures. Extra insurance, in their view, incresases the risk of loss, rather than reducing it.

S&W shipping

I just sent back a revolver for warranty service. S&W sent me a shipping label with the same declared value. They also included a note stating that irregardless of what they insured it for, they would replace the handgun if it was lost. You can also track the handgun via the Fedex web site. Mine was delivered and signed for less than 20 hours after it was picked up. I think they are trying to save some money by not paying extra for insurance they probably will not need. Btw when I sent my model 66 back last year, it came back promptly and the work done on it was top notch. It is now the nicest revolver I own.

I had the same experience as reservecop55, they enclosed a note saying not to worry about it as the revolver was fully covered by them. Send away, worst that can happen is Smith and Wesson ends up indebted to you for a brand new gun!

$100.00 is probably how much it costs S&W to manufacture the darn thing anyway, so why should they spend the extra dough on something unneeded.

That's exactly what I was thinking. There is a big mark up on firearms and accessories.

Hey:
I have had them a shipping label to me in the past. It is true they are only covered for 100.00.What is not true is them replacing a "COLLECTABLE" or older revolver... They simply do not have them to do so end of story..If they do not have part's to repair the older revolver's maybe you could explain to me how they could replace a 40 Year old gun ? I believe they may offer a new style revolver that would not come close to original in finish, Nor pinned & recessed and you would be sure to get one with the stupid lock if they did replace it.S&W pay's the shipping on several thousand gun's in a year's span. They also get a deal from Fed-X on shipping for doing this.I also feel it is pretty nice of them to pick up the freight on a revolver that may be way out of warranty. If loss or damage is a concern then pay 60.00 round trip to ship it yourself and don't look a gift horse in the mouth !!I guess it comes down to one thing... how much do you love that old revolver ?? Regards, Hammerdown.

S&W gave me their FedEx account number, and so far I have used it twice. With their account number, I can just fill out the air bill myself, and have FedEx pick the gun up at my home. sending it that way, I can declare any ammount I want on the air bill. :)

FWIW, S&W's customer service can't be beat!
