Man Arrested for Shooting Out Car Alarm

I knew someone who had an alarm go off on the street in front of his house about 6 times every night. It would time out, but SOMEthing was setting it off. The owner of the car lived 10 houses down, but always parked it directly occross the street from this guy's house.

One morning when the car's owner came back, it seemed that someone opened the hood of his car with a crowbar and disconnected the battery.

The car disappeared after that.

Hmm what would be worse.... a continuous, increasingly irritating, high pitched, annoying car alarm or 2 or three shots in the night and then silence.

Who listens to those things anyway? I mean, most people I've seen setting them off are the owners, relatives, or just accidental.

Heck. The alarm in my mom's car locks the inside out. If the alarm is engaged (it self-engages after about 15 sec), no one can get in or out without disengaging it first.

B.S. to car alarms, I say. Have you ever seen a criminal breaking into a car and the alarm scaring him off? I've never seen it, kinda like guns on streets...never seen it.

All this hogwash about technology in cars, mine doesn't have it. No airbags of any kind, no ABS, no computer tracking, no GPS, no OnStar, no power seats, heated seats, and of course, no alarm. It's only 20 years old.

And it gets about 35 MPG on the highway, too

Why is it that the people with the crappiest cars have alarms on them anyways? I just laugh when I see some bozo setting the alarm on his "Gem" thinking nobody's going to want to steal that piece o' junk in the first place.

And on another note. I remember a job site once where this PIA electrician would set the alarm on his truck while it was on the job site. It kind of PO'd a lot of the other people on the site because they felt he was insinuating that they weren't honest people. Construction workers can get to thinking like that, it's a gift I believe. Well, someone discovered that if you just bumped his truck the thing would go off. And this was the days before remote reset or timers. The guy was walking out to his truck CONSTANTLY all day every day to reset the alarm because guys would give it a little elbow and snicker as they walked by it . He never did catch on and was never smart enough to just not set the thing anymore either. Who knows how he ever got any work done.

Car alarms suck.

The trick to car shooting is to get the battery. No juice, no noise. This can get tricky, as the battery could be on the left or right behind the radiator, in front of the firewall, or in the trunk

My basic gripe is that if you're not prepared to resond, do set the damned thing. We have an idiot neighbor with anolder Lincoln Mk VIII who usually takes off for the Delaware shore every weekend. He has several cars (all older, mostly crappy rust buckets) in his driveway and on the street in front of his house. For some reason, the alarm on the Linc started going off at irregular intervals every 20 minutes or so on a Saturday moring. By late Saturday afternoon everyone was pretty sick of it and the cops were called. Of course, there was "nothing they could do". By Sunday AM, we were all really, really sick of it.

A group of us confronted the guy upon his return and made it real clear that S*** happens, and it would happen to his car if it every happened again. He sold the car.

These stories reminded me of the time a good friend of mine took a nap in his dormroom at Clemson University and woke up before the alarm went off. He forgot to unset it and left the room for several hours. When he came back it was still going and he had quite a few pissed off neighbors. The dorm he lived in had really thin walls.

I kind of think of my car alarm like my remote starter, or even the remote for my cd player. You think, what good is this, until you have one, then you don't want to live without it

My alarm (viper) tells me on the keychain, whether it's locked or not, and notifies me if my alarm is going off. It also lets me know if I haven't armed it, if I get to far away without locking it. Only happened once, but kind of a cool feature I thought.

Also I think even the more basic alarms are good for all cars. For professional theives, not a chance. But for the many would be theives, it could deter them because of the noise, and attracting attention.

...the usage of a firearm in this manner (shooting a friggin' car alarm out?)
I can sure sympathize, and I definitely can't say I haven't been tempted to 30-tap an offending automobile....

But really, this sort of behavior really should be discouraged...after all, if people feel free to blaze away at car alarms, how are we gonna convince any antis that we're not all crazy?

I've found this thread to be an interesting phenomenon. In all my time on this board, I've found everyone here to be extremely consciencious regarding firearms -- berating people who have done far worse than this guy. Yet almost everyone in this thread sympathizes with this guy.



And oh yeah, PLUS ONE. How I've dreamed of doing the same thing!

And yeah, why is it always the cars with THE most sensitive alarms, that always go off sometime after midnight, are the ones with the $300 chassis and body and the $3000 tires and rims????

There must just be some ingrained instinct in the reptilian portion of our brain to protect us from these vile abominations.

what I used to do was crawl under the car, and cut the battery cable. Instant alarm disabler, and no noise.

one of the neighbors in my condo associations kids buddy has one of them hi tech alarms on a 400 dollar rustbucket with the big rims , and he would set it ( horn ) and go out drinking with his buddies and the damn thing would go off . the first thing I want to know who inthe right mind is gonna steal this thing out inthe middle of nowhere ? oh I forgot maybe the deer want to go joyriding , finnally we had enough asked him not to set the alarm ,he refused , told him to park it off the property he refused , well I made a call to the local sheriffs dept they couldn'tdo nothing , so the car mysterously moved 1 mile by itself , should have seen the skid marks it left , but the county towed it as it was now an abandoned vehicle . he now keeps the alarm off because the tow bill was $500 . and he was reminded how cars move around here buy themselves .(my neighbor said it looked funny seeing the car crying like a little kid as it was being dragged away )

I had a classmate have have his $1000 stereo system stolen from his car during school. He came out from class, heard the alarm, went to the top of the parking ranp (So it wouldn't get scratched ) and there was a broken window and a stolen stereo. He was later told that the alarm had been going for nearly 3 hours (No timer) and HE was the first one that reported the break in.
