anyone use a unertl scope on a varmit gun? id like to buy 1 for use on a browning 1885 in 22-250 would use it for groundhogs and paper punching can ya give me some pros and cons with these scopes ive never used 1 before

Most Unertl scopes I've seen were designed for smallbore competition. While I know some were made for centerfire rifles (used in Vietnam for some sniper rifles but had trouble with the balsam glue between lens elements in the wet climate), I suspect most were not built to stand up to heavy recoil.

Mine has a 1 1/4" objective and has lived its entire life on rimfire target rifles. The externally adjusting mount system has a recoil spring, but I wouldn't want to subject the thing to any significant recoil. If you have one that was made for tougher duty, you might want to consider the value versus utility. Folks collect these old scopes and they can be worth some pretty good money.

They are a beautiful example of the precision and craftsmanship of a bygone era.

i spent some time w/ a unertl on top of a 20-pound 25-06... i suppose for its time, it was cream of the crop, but current manufacture decent scopes are better. i guess it depends on how much the scope's going for... if it is the one w/ the external recoil spring, i suppose it may be worth a little extra money to someone, but like i said, current manufacture stuff will be better.

On the same gun as you mentioned I use a 6-24 variable; a Busnell 4200. I have 4 Unertls and the Busnell 4200 is as bright or brighter as the $1000 Unertl programmer 20x.

I suspect most were not built to stand up to heavy recoil.

I have a 20 x by 2" Unertl with external micrometer adjustments, which has seen many years use on both smallbore and highpower rifles. Granted, have never put it on a magnum, but it handles 190 gr. 30-06 with no problems and they are extremely repeatable.

Agree that modern scopes are very good and many are quite repeatable, also. My biggest complaint with my scope is the weight of the 2" glass, but it is quite clear.

If you have one that was made for tougher duty, you might want to consider the value versus utility. Folks collect these old scopes and they can be worth some pretty good money.

Have noticed the advertised prices and must agree they may be getting a bit too expensive to use, however. :)

I had one on a 222 benchrest rifle some time ago, expensive setup and heavy, didnt have any problems with the one I had,the optics seemed bright.
