i recently purchased a savage model 12 22-250. Please help me decide on which scope I should purchase for around $300. I have been considering either a Bushnell or Sightron. The gun will be used for occasional varmit control and punching paper.

3-9x40 will do the trick. but going to the gun shop and finding something you like and you like the way it looks an feels is what id do. find a few diffrent ones and then come back to the THR and let us no which scopes you have narrowed it down to. their are so many its mind bogaling

For a prairie poodle/target gun I would be looking at something like 4-12 or 4.5-14 as a minimum, and my 6.5-20 isn't too much scope. Although a 3-9 or 2.5-10 would work also it limits me due to my poor eyesight at 200 yards and greater.

Burris FFII is decent for the money as is the Bushnell 3200, Weaver V series is very good for the money, also in this range would be the Pentax Whitetails Unlimited, either a Leupold VX1 or 2 might fall in the range, Nikon Buckmaster is a very good scope in 4.5-14 with side focus adjustable objective.

both my 22-250's wear leupold scopes, but ther price is out of your range, i use the FX-III 12x40mm with fine-duplex reticles, something like the sightron 12x, or bushnell 3200 10x would be good for what you want.

You will probably be happier with a little more power than 3-9. I don't think I would be too concerned with the larger objectives either. I have had 4-12's and KT 15's on my 22-250 and I like the 15 fixed power better.

I have a 4x16x50 B&L 4000 (now Bushnell 4200) on my 22-250 and a 6.5x20x44 VX-III on my AR. I used to lean towards lower end of the power range. After shooting the AR with the stronger optics, that's the way I'm starting to go. You can only shoot as well as you can see.

If you can find one, there's a line called Intensity. Yeah, I'd never heard of it either. They are made by Weaver and were designed to go against the VX-III's. The economy collapsed and Weaver scrapped the idea of the intro of a new line. I bought one in 6.5x20x44 for my .204 CZ. Checked it side by side against the VX-III and it's about the same for WAY less $$$.

Primos has an equivalent to the Nikon Monarch that is evidently a lot for the money. I'd go minimum of 16 on top end, and 20x is not too much IMO. That said, cheap scopes can get very cloudy at the higher settings. I had a 6x18x50 Bushnell Banner on the .204 and took it off for that reason.

edit to add...target turrets are really nice, and be sure to get AO (adjustable objective) to eliminate parallax (very important.

Alpen Scopes

There's an optics company coming on pretty strong from the Left Coast.
Alpen has been having binoculars and sport optics manufactured in China and imported here. Their binoculars have won Outdoor Life's "GreatBuy" in Gear Tests for six years running. They are now designing and having riflescopes manufactured, and make an excellent product at a reasonable price.

I have their 3.5-10X50 Apex mounted on a Remington Model 673 Guide Rifle in .300 SAUM. It has given excellent service. I also have a their
4-16X50AO and plan on mounting it on a new Remington VTR in .22-250 for an upcoming prairie dog hunt.

Both these scopes retail in the $350-$400 range. Go to www.alpenoptics.com for more information.

My motto.....
Buy it if it says
MADE IN JAPAN - pretty good stuff
MADE IN AMERICA- think about it, Leupold and who???
GERMANY/AUSTRIA - hmmmm:rolleyes:.....kinda out of you price range, but, pretty decent stuff.
Personally, I'm huge fan of the B&L or Bushnell ELITE .
My hunting buddy exchanged a VX-III for a Bushnell 4200 after having Leupolds since he could afford them.

In your price range I would check out the

Nikon Buckmaster and the Leupold Rifleman series as well as the Weaver classic line. I also think that the Bushnell 4200 series is pretty decent. All my rifles wear leupold VXII and VXIIIs and Nikon Monarchs but those out of your price range unless you find one used. I would definitely look on the boards for a good used scope. I picked up 3 6.5x20 VXIIIs last year for $400 a piece. A good used VXII in 6x18 might run you under $300 and is a damn fine scope. Some of the best deals that I have seen are on fixed power scopes. I have seen fixed 24 power leupolds for $250 because everybody thinks they need a variable power scope. Not everyone does. There is a realy good deal over at 6mmbr.com right now on a Baush and Lomb fixed 24 power. If I had $300 I would buy it. Check it out.

Burris and Bushnell. If you follow ebay you can get some great deals on 3200's.

Also, I'd REALLY follow the auctions on Bausch & Lomb. Since they've been taken over by Bushnell, the name recognition has dwindled. They were great scope and sometimes sell for way cheap.
