What's your favorite, trustworthy, low cost, handgun for SD?

Makarov 9x18

Inexpensive, but not cheap in quality.

As for the SD role...I think it depends on your definition.

First, buying a very expensive pistol doesn't mean you've bought a quality firearm. It just means you've paid a lot for it. It might still be no better than a pistol you paid 1/3 as much for. Do research and practice before purchasing...if that's possible for you.

Secondly, I'm of the opinion that SD means you have to think about what the aftermath of your SD is going to mean. An example of this: I personally was involved in a little local trouble out West one year. The police took my firearm from me because I'd discharged it into the ground to break up a fight. Technically, I was violating the law and they seized it and cited me. I got it back 2 months later when my case came up and was thrown out by the judge. When I got it back, it had several more scratches and the rear sight was loose. If I'd paid a lot for it, I'd have been upset.
Two hours after the police left the house though, I got called on by one of the brothers of the men who had been fighting. He'd heard that I had shot his brother and that he was in the hospital. His brother was in the hospital...but because of a broken jaw from the fight, not because I popped him. I told him what had happened and asked him to leave...showed him that I still had a pistol. I'd bought three of the same type and had this one and another as spares. I'm not able to afford to have 3 H&K .45s stashed around my house. But for the price of one H&K, I can buy 6 Makarov pistols, a case of ammo, and a lousy holster. I won't be upset to hand my pistol to the police if they seize it as evidence because I'll have a couple of spares shooting the same ammo and using the same clips.

I guess what I'm saying is, just because the cops have come to your house doesn't mean that the threats to your life will necessarily be over. Frequently, it don't mean that. Also, they won't necessarily see the situation the same way that you do, and even if they do, they may still take your firearm.

To me, SD means having more than one firearm. Don't buy lousy firearms, but don't be afraid to buy something inexpensive either...if your experience tells you its a good type of firearm.

Just my .02

Hey, I know this wasn't the point of your story, but would ever do that again? Warning shot to break up a fight?

I would...depending on the situation. At the time, I was living in a trailer park area and had plenty of soft ground to shoot into. If I was looking at firing it into concrete, I'd probably not do it. Also, the fight had started in the street and moved into my yard, and was taking place right outside my front door. I figured I could claim some interest since I didn't want a couple of dead guys there. And finally, there weren't that many people standing around...maybe 5 or 6.

One thing I can say for using this method...it's an attention-getter. You can shout all day and get no response. One shot in the dirt and everyone is looking right at you. Stopped the fight real quick. In spite of this, I'm not recommending this method to anyone. It worked for me. Next time, who knows? They might pull out guns of their own and clean my clock.

Edit:
You were right to ask me though. It shows you are thinking about how you yourself might react in a similar situation. Self Defense isn't just about picking the right gun. In fact, I'd say that ought to be about 10% of your concern. The other 90% should be devoted to figuring out what types of threats are most common in your area, and then planning what you'd do both before, during and after. And thinking about the aftermath. That's why I recommend having at least a couple of good quality but inexpensive firearms around your home. Even in a righteous shoot, they will probably take your gun as evidence. Although I was told today that not all states will take you gun. Anyone else heard the same...or different?

My Taurus 82. I bought it new to replace my ancient S&W Military and Police and am very satisfied. I think the build quality of this newer Taurus is better than any newer S&W I have seen in the last few years. And the lock is a much better design.

A used Model 10. 4 inch skinny barrel in .38 special. Blue.

That was exactly the line of thinking that prompted me to start this thread. My CZ40 is sometimes a backup gun to a primary CCW and sometimes it is my primary CCW. I've been considering getting another low cost, but good quality handgun (or two) just in case something like that happens to me. I have an expensive 1911 that would definately do the job, but really I'd rather not carry a $900+ gun around, expecially when it won't do the job any better than that $300 CZ.

Getting your gun confiscated isn't something anyone likes to think about, but we should plan for it to happen.

OK Laugh at me

Out of my brood of guns, I can honestly say that my High-Point 9mm is the best hand gun I have ever owned! I have put over 2000 rounds through it with just a few problems that probably came from me reloading my own ammo, and talk about it being dead on the guys at the range with their $600-700.00 fancy models can't touch it.

I know alot of you are laughing and calling it a piece of crap, but do you own one or is it because it cost $139.00. So laugh if you will.

Witness 10mm. $285 with 5 magazines brand new. Powerful, accurate and with the right ammo, it can dish out a world of hurt out to 100 yards. It was my truck gun for years in west texas where a rifle would have been a better choice but to bulky.

My collection of "cheap" guns:

Ruger Security Six, 6" blue .357, $175
FEG Hi-power copy, $150
Russian Mak, $140
Prison surplus Remington 870 w/ extended mag, $150
Mossberg 20 ga PG, $130

Just keep your eyes open and the deals do come up...

My bargin pistols:

Daily CCW Keltec P32 $179
Woods and Nightstand Taurus M85UL $259
Cool Fullsize - Truck Gun Springfield WWII edit. $389

Best value, the Taurus. It is the most versatile. Snake shot, +P hollowpoints, concealable and reliable.

I love the other two, count on the Keltec daily and the Springer is a blast and if in a SHTF I'd pick it over the other two.

About two years ago I bought my first revolver, over the net, sight unseen. It was a S&W M10-5 and it cost me all of $180, s&h and transfer fee included. It was (and is) in great shape, about 98% of the original bluing still intact, very tight and accurate as can be. I have had no problems with it and would have no trouble trusting my life to it.

Earlier this year I also picked up a Makarov from a fellow member here for $125 and it has not disappointed either.

S&W Model 10 - I can buy 'em locally all day long for less than $200 and they just flat out WORK.

I don't think you can beat a S&W Model 10 for a $150 gun.Outstanding reliability and accuracy, versatility and good looks for what will only get you potmetal in the new market. For inexpensive CCW I reckon a J frame is a pretty solid choice as well.

The only inexpensive gun I've ever carried for SD has been a Makarov. I still carry a Bulgie Mak occassionally.

In a do or die situation, I'd have more faith in a $200-$300 used S&W model 10, than I would in a $1000+ 1911.

Same here. And I love 1911's.

Ditto!!!

I have three main guns that I use as SD guns. My Beretta 92fs is my home defense pistol. My Kahr K-9 is my normal carry gun. My S&W 642 is my glove box and stick it in my coat pocket gun. None of these are really low cost but there are plenty that are that would work.

Here are few of some of the guns I have had that I would have no issue trusting with my life if I couldn't have my Beretta 92fs, Kahr K-9 or S&W 642.
1. S&W 3913. 100% reliable and easy to CCW and shoot.
2. S&W 6906. 100% reliable and with the 5906 mags, has the same capacity as my Beretta 92fs in a much smaller and lighter package.
3. Star Firestar M-43 9mm.
4. Any S&W or Ruger revolver.

I'd have to agree with the potmetal, with two caveats--Eastern Bloc milsurp pistols and new Hi-Points.

I'm looking for an inexpensive SD handgun myself.
Can you really get Model 10s for significantly less than $200? There is ammo and leather to consider.
