i wonder if it's legal to carry a blackpowder handgun loaded in a minivault in the backseat of a car in california.

just wondering.

Not likely, no loaded firearms in vehicles in Cali without the mythical CCW permit, I believe - I ran afoul of that about 20 years ago north of San Francisco, got extremely lucky. I know Fed law doesn't consider BP to be "firearms", but have you checked Cali or local laws to see what they say?

When it comes to laws, don't "wonder" - that's what gets you locked up. Rather check what the law actually says, either online through your state DOJ (or equivalent) Web site, or through asking the cops, or checking with your own lawyer. Making assumptions, or gambling that you know when you really aren't sure, are sure and certain ways to get yourself into all sorts of hot water.

You will never get a good answer on the carrying of a non-gun like a blackpowder.

No matter how many teams of lawyers, cops, prosecutors or judges you talk to it will always come down to what the cop wants to do at the moment you are challenged.

Then you will most likely be charged and have to take it to court.

If you could get a police chief to sign off some kind of document saying it's ok
that might work better.

most states do not consider a black powder weapon to be a non-gun. Just because the ATF doesnt consider it to be a firearm for the purposes of transfer doesnt mean that your state doesnt consider it to be a firearm.

No gun control laws in California

California does not have "gun" or "firearm" control laws. They are officially called "Dangerous Weapons Control Laws" for a reason and cover a lot more than firearms
