Went out yesterday afternoon to shoot up some UMC/Remington out of my M&P 40. Had a box of 165's & 180's to get rid of, they don't group very well to my liking in that gun. Instead of just blasting away to get them out of the range bag, I thought it would be a good time to work on some technique. Setup at 21 feet and used the brass catcher to save some time. It is hard to train yourself to not just fire away in haste without thinking of a great site picture, trigger pull, etc. Ok, done with that, why not try out the SW1911 sitting in the bag. I had some 230 gr Lawman's & S&B's with me. Just started shooting at the 40 S&W targets that were already full of holes. Looked like they were getting it done in all that mess. I did have one hiccup (stovepiped) with the 2nd S&B shot. I think I might have caused it from the way I had my thumbs resting on the frame. Switching from different guns most likely the cause. I did use a magazine that came with the gun but was never used until then. Time to put up some fresh ones. Here are the 2 targets when I got done. Sixteen shots for the Speers and 25 with the S&B's. My last 2 shots with the S&B's just dipped into the white. :banghead: I'm liking this gun more and more evertime I take it out. Also, cutting my normal shooting distances in half or more helps a ton. You can see what you are doing wrong and try and correct it. Time to go buy some more S&B's.

Tonight, it's S&B, Lawman, Winchester Wallyworld 230 gr matchup. The Colt might show up to make it a pair. :)

Now, if they could just lose the advertising billboard and the forward grooves I might be interested. It's the only 1911 we can buy here in MA.

Judah, I really like my S&W billboard. So much so I had to get a S&W Sc. ;) I like them both, but the fullsize shoots sooo nice..."like butter". :D

I was hesitant at first look at the big SW1911 on the side. After about 15 minutes of deciding to make the purchase, I caved. I like it now, it breaks things up. I kind of like it better than the newer ones. I do not like the "CAUTION - CAPABLE OF FIRING WITH MAGAZINE REMOVED" on the side. At least its not etched in stone like a Ruger. :what: The forward grooves blend in good with the gun. I'm no purist because the external extractor doesn't faze me one bit. :)

You wouldn't catch me living in MA although I could use a swimming lesson or two. :neener:

Me either, however, I did recently visit the S&W shooting center. It's pretty nice. For $25 you can rent any gun they make, 1 box of ammo and 3 targets. The only bad part is you have to go to MA.

Just joking of course.

I'm sure it's no different than any other state. I just boil when Senor Swimmer & Rambo Kerry are doing their thing.

That tour sounds like a neat idea. I better sharpen up on my skills before doing that. Bringing back a clean sheet of paper from the firing line wouldn't make for a good ride home. It would give the range hands something to laugh over at the break table. :)

I too have the "bottom" of the line S&W 1911 with Novak sights. I also can't stand those forward grooves that seem to be the norm on damn near every 1911 clone out there! What attracted me to the S&W in particular was it's lack of these grooves. I have found this pistol to be an excellent, beautifully made piece. No nonsensical "breaking in" period either, this pistol is more than I expected. I like it a lot better than my friend's Kimber, but his sights are better than the S&W's so I am more accurate with his. Maybe I just need to tweak my eyeballs a bit, but I do like the Kimber's wider front sight and wider rear sight groove. If I could get Novak-ish sights with that kind of sight picture I'd get them in a second.

Well I got back up to the range today. I went for a little motorcycle ride (200+ miles) ealier in the day so my hands & arms were feeling a little used up. Why not head to the range, it was beautiful out there. I forgot the Wally World Winchesters :banghead: but had some Ultramax reloaded leads in the bag. Based on my shooting, the SW1911 didn't seem to mind too much. The Colt had other ideas! The S&W was still dirty from last time out and other times before that. The Colt was clean & lubed so I shot 2 magazines worth of jacketed bullets to foul it up and get used to the trigger and feel of the gun. On the second shot, I lost a painted front dot along with one of the rears. Hey, that looks different from the last shot. lol Cleared the gun of all ammo and dug out the paint from the other so it was an all black dot setup. oops! Used same distances & procedures as last time out. Shot a magazine with one gun, moved to the other, then repeated for a total of 16 shots on a target. On to the next ammo brand. Shot them in order of S&B, Lawman, then Ultramax. The Lawmans got an extra shot each to use the box up. Not impressed at all with any that went through the Colt. I can't believe it was the sights because I was getting a nice read off from them. Not worried about hitting the bullseye, just out there to get things to group together then work from there. The first three shots with the SW1911 with the S&B's were printed a little off from the rest of the group because my grip wasn't right. They surprised me too much! I remembered where I had my hand placed the other day. Hard to believe how different these two guns feel from one another. The slide action just feels better on the silver one. The SW1911 allows me to have my hand turned more around the grip and have a thumbs high to the slide area and held over the safety with the dominant one. I can't even attempt that with the Colt. My last eight shots with the Ultramax's through the Smith were the lower group. My arms were feeling dead from the joyride. My disappointment with the Colt kindof overshadows my enjoyment with the SW1911 as of late. I hate to have it sit on the sidelines while the Smith gets all the glory. Don't know what's up with it.

Nice shootin'.

Doesn't it just make you boil when you have to look at the external extractor all the time.

j/k

I've always preferred Colts to other brands of 1911-type pistols, although after examining, handling and shooting the SW1911 I finally ordered one. It was a SW1911SC 5", and it's been a fine pistol. I made one small adjustment to the front sight before shooting it (centering it in the dovetail, as it was slightly offset), and it was amazingly accurate when I took it to the range.

My newest Colt, a stainless XSE Government Model, wasn't quite so accurate ... and it annoyed me when the left side of the ambidextrous Safety Lock (thumb safety) cracked in half and fell off the pistol just about when I had reached about 200 rounds fired the first day I took it to the range. That's one of the non-Colt produced parts on the XSE's. Otherwise, the new Colt was acceptably accurate and reliable in overall functioning. When I scoped the hammer and sear the fit was textbook perfect, although the trigger pull was a bit on the heavy side, averaging around 6 1/2 pounds at first. Not a problem, since I happen to prefer a 5-6 pound trigger for a 1911-type defensive pistol, anyway.

I think the S&W SW1911 series is one of the best bargains going for a well-made, reliable and accurate 1911-type pistol, if not the best. Time will tell how the MIM parts do in their version, regarding their service life, but S&W has some serious investment and experience in MIM production. They also have some experience and expertise when it comes to external extractors, too.;)

One of these days someone's going to ask who built his custom Star. :)
