SW1911 - accurate but unreliable

10-ring,

I'm kinda on that quest too. To find the right 1911 for me...Good luck GUnhead

The next one in the line will be a carry piece by STI. I think finding a good 1911 requires basically one thing - a manufacturer with top class quality control.

Lone_Gunman,
Maybe Americans shoot better than Europeans?
Yeah, that's a possibility just by the sheer number of rounds fired in the States - even if the IPSC open world champ is an annoyingly young frenchman who is shooting an italian made CZ-75 clone -, but why on earth they need unreliable guns? ;)

Old Fuff,

Thanks for your help, again!

Gunhead:

It’s been an interesting thread ……

There is such a thing as a Government Model that works right out of the box. I know because I own some of them. One in particular will hand-feed empty cases, and the barrel is 1950’s stock and hasn’t been throated.

Here in the United States many share your frustrations, and the available resources we have are far grater then those available to you in Hungary. Simple things like buying and trying different magazines or ammunition.

As an afterthought, another thing that may be causing the feeding problem is the Smith’s external extractor. Be sure the cartridge rims can slip under it as the round is fed.

While there are all kinds of restrictions on the international shipment of guns, ammunition and gun parts and accessories I hope this isn’t the case with books. If you can, buy a copy of Jerry Kuhnhausen’s “The Colt .45 Automatic - A shop Manual.†I believe you might be able to order a copy over the ‘net. It will prove to be invaluable when it comes to working on, or simply understanding how these pistols work.

Meanwhile keep looking. It’s out there somewhere and you’ll find it (or make it as the case may be). I wish you good luck.

This has been a good thread. On other boards this would have turned into a "hate-fest".

I do read great reports on the STI Trojan. Perhaps they do get it right out of the box.

That said, I do think you have a better chance of getting a reliable 4-5" 45 single stack "out of the box" today, than in the last 20 years or so. I thought Kimber was going to lead the way, but they seem to be tripping over their feet now- familiar story.

But, all in all, the 1911 manufacturers at one time or another are known for their inconsistent quality.

Worse comes to worse, in the states, we have a "modified" out of the box 1911. Basically, have a gunsmith do a "fluff and buff" before you even pick it up.

Does that count? :)

I found 1911's to be so finicky that I traded my Kimber's and SA's for SIG's and S&W revolvers. And then I saw the new SW1911.

Mine is early production and accurate, reliable - with the best fit and finish I have seen in an auto.

And I take comfort in the fact that S&W will do a recall. I'll eventually send mine in for "preventive" maintenance...so I'll get some range time with my SIG P220St and S&W 625.
