I'd been in the mood to buy a cheap rifle for a while for backyard plinking, so I used my holiday to drive to a couple of different stores. I stopped by a pawn shop to look around, and found a Marlin 60 like I had when I was a kid. This one had a scope which I always wanted but never had.

After I inspected it I payed $70 and was on my way. I stopped by walmart and picked up some crappy rimfire ammo and shot a few rounds through it just to try it out. I love it, so much quieter than my other guns! I'm gonna work on sighting the scope in this afternoon. I'll take some pics when I get home as well. It has a unusual striped stock. I'll eventually get a new Marlin 60 from Academy, they were only $99 new there! :D

Try Rimfire Central

Model 60's are the most underrated 22lr out there today, IMNSHO.

Cheap, plentiful and far more accurate than they have any right to be. The olde rones hold 15 to 17 rounds I believe. Newer ones only 10 because otherwise they become an assault weapon.

Head over to RimfireCentral.com and go to the Marlin forum. You'll find a lot of folks over there with Model 60's that give the Ruger 10/22 guys a real run for their money right out of the box.

Marlin seems to have gotten it just right connecting that barrel to the chamber. Of cours considering the millions they have cranked out they should have it right.

They also have a downloadable set of easy instructions on disassembling a Model 60 for cleaning in the files section..

I have 2 so far. One cost $85 and it was in the original box from 1977 with all the paperwork. The other was somebody' "Closet Queen" with a few dings on the wood and a perfectly clean muzzle for $65.

Some 60's are a little finicky about what you feed them, so buy a few small boxes to experiment with. Once you find some cheap stuff (Aquila seems to work for a lot of folks) buy a couple of bricks of it for your arsenal.

Good gun and fun caliber. Nothing like plinking and not thinking about reloading. Glad you found a good deal.

Here is the stock, looks kinda weird, but I like it...

Took it out in the back yard after work from 25 yards with Remington Subsonic....

that stock! me very likey! plus mod 60's are my absolute favorite, do all go anywhere, rifle. I have one that is so sick accurate, i would not take 500 bucks for it. try to find you some Aguila or Golden Eagle(american name) rounds. they will really shoot in that 60.

That stock is awesome!   I also purchased one of these from a pawn shop a while back. Can't say that I have found anything bad about it. Another really nice IMO cheap .22 is the Romanian trainer. Bolt action with a 5 shot clip. I paid $50 for mine and it is the most accurate rifle I have ever seen. Here in PA we can't hunt with S/A. So when I season comes around my model 60 has to stay home with mom.

Looks like someone stripped the finish, went over it with a blowtorch here and there, then refinished. Looks good.

I have a model 70 Marlin. which is a bolt action .22lr. Paid $60 dollars for it OTD and have NEVER had a problem with it. I prefer bolt action for hunting, but it's fun as heck to take out to the range as well. I'll shoot out a hole at 25 yrds, then just keep shooting through the same hole until I get bored, then make another hole, and keep shooting that one out. This thing is DEAD accurate! Even after dropping it god knows how many times, bumping it around like a derby car, and not cleaning it for..... wow, it has been a long time.

Semi-auto is always fun... but with this rifle, I never need to make a second shot.

Marlin 60 takedown.

I have several Model 60s. Both in Glenfield and Marlin. Also a few Model 99s.

I clean them every 2000 or so rounds. They shot best with VERY little to NO oil in the action. Lately I have been using a #2 pencil to color all the moving parts after I have strip them and sprayed them out with brake cleaner.

Look here for an excellent guide on taking it apart.

got one and like it a lot....

picked it up at Walmart some years ago....and yes, they made me wait forever and feel like a criminal.....manager had to walk the gun out of the store.

any how....I think I need to take that little puppy with me to the range this weekend.
