Purchasing Ammo -- When did it become a crime?

If they can sell only two boxes to you at a time. Walk out with them; put them in your car. Then, walk back in, to buy two more. Or if they will not let you do that, let your wife, girlfriend buy them. Another way, go to a different wal-mart in the neighborhood.
I would also....let them know, how you went about this. To let them know, how "lame" their rules (not the law, as some of the employees would tell you) really are. And say to that person; those at headquarters (wal-mart) should stop telling jokes all day long.
Me. They might sell ammo cheaper, but I could care less, if they went out of business

Never had a problen buying ammo at Walmart. Try buying more than 2 2032 watch/"nickel" batteries. Nope. You can only buy 2...:scrutiny:

ETA I needed 4 - 2 for each dog collar.

I'm sick and tired of listening to everyone complain about Wal*Mart. If you don't like them, don't shop there! It is free country you know. And quit your bitching.

No!

If you look at your WalMart receipt's fine print it clearly states:

"This receipt of purchase entitles the purchaser to righteously rant about WalMart, Sam's Club, and any other WalMart stores, provided that purchaser continue to shop at store of origin after ranting is ended."

;)

I agree AVM. I have implemented a no Wal Mart policy and do not plan on doing any business with them unless under duress.

So wait. Am I getting this right: You have to be over 21 for pistol ammo, as a federal law, or is it just some stupid wal-mart thing? My friend and I go shotgun shooting almost once a week, sometimes we bring my dad's XD, but he's always had the ammo there. We've never had to buy it. Does this mean we're going to be screwed every time we want to take the XD?

2 things - first, my local wal-mart sells the ammo at the counter and does not require an escort to the front of the store for just some ammunition. Guns themselves are a different matter. Sorry to hear your wal-mart is so insane. Second, the gun stores in my area charge 28$ for a box of remington UMC .38special rounds. **** that nonsense.

I ask for .45 ACP, the re-tread hands me .40 S&W?! As if it doesn't have 3/4'' bold print on the front already...

This happened to a friend of mine last week. He didn't notice the mistake until he fired the .40 in his .45.

Again, to dispel more paranoia. Many retail stores place limits on how much of an item (like ammunition) you can buy, not because they think you want to go on a murderous rampage, but because they don't like to be out of stock on something. For low cost ammo, if they don't add the hassle of 2 boxes per purchase someone will come and buy the entire inventory at once. The EXACT same rule applies to XBoxes and PS2s, which have long lead times, it's not because they think you will go on a killing spree with an XBox.

Gun Control Act of 1968

(b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or deliver --

(1) any firearm or ammunition to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than eighteen years of age, and, if the firearm, or ammunition is other than a shotgun or rifle, or ammunition for a shotgun or rifle, to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than twenty-one years of age;

Why take the time to post this? You didn't need to read the thread. I simply was stating my experience and wondering whether others have had similar experiences at Wal-Mart. The first time this happened to me was last week, and I decided right away not to buy ammo there anymore after that--and ammo was the only thing I ever went there for b/c of continually bad experiences in every department. Basically, I'm done shopping at Wal-Mart. The Waltons are rich enough. I may resort to the online purchasing options in bulk. I was not complaining and then heading back into the place for my next box of ammo. Plus, if we don't speak up about these ridiculous policies, who will? So chill out and let people have discussions. After all, this is a discussion board.

Also, I second El Tejon's sentiment that we should shop at gun stores. We need to support them, because they support us and the IIA.
That's not necessarily the case.

I agree with this completely. In general, I support small businesses, but there is one shop near my house that really sucks, gives piss poor customer service, shovels B.S. to ignorant customers all day, and charges outrageous prices. That place won't get my business. There is, however, a great little gun shop not far from my house that has very friendly, very helpful salesmen who will be honest with you. And, their prices are fair, and about $1-200 less than the other shop in the same city. It's this kind of shop that I'll support. Find a good local gun shop and support it if you can.

Deanimator, did you just leave or did you tell the clerk or the owner why you weren't coming back? They won't change if they don't know customers are unhappy.

We really need a Wal-Mart forum.
LOL... yeah. I love reading complaints about W-M.

I agree AVM. I have implemented a no Wal Mart policy and do not plan on doing any business with them unless under duress.

I quit going to W-M a long time ago. One night, I had to make a special trip to the W-M 2 miles down the road. It was around 11:30pm, and when I pulled in to the parking lot, I realized that I had my checkbook, but forgot my wallet and ID. I thought... well, I've been writing checks here for 15 years so I'll hope they'll let me buy my stuff...
After standing in line, they wouldn't take my check since I didn't have my ID :banghead:
I told the guy "I've been writing checks here for many years". He said "sorry, can't help you".

Since then, I've established a "NO Wal-Mart" policy.

Luckily I reload my own ammo.

Those of you that keep buying guns and ammo from Wally's get what you deserve. They keep the ammo locked up to prevent employees from stealing it. Employee theft costs them more than shoplifting!!
Buy your ammo on line in bulk and you can beat Wal-Mart prices even when you include shipping. It comes to your front door and you don't have to go to the zoo to buy it.:banghead: :banghead:

I just reload.... As long as Wally World doesn't start offering low cost reloading supplies I will be able to stay away.

Wally world in my town does have reloading supplies. Not the best prices, but when you factor in HAZMAT and shipping, it's not that bad. Not a big selection though. They carry primers, powder, cases, bullets, and most of the tools you'd need (all RCBS). I just don't buy from them usually because I prefer to deal with the little guy. But in a pinch it's great.

Iss foar da safetee of ower cuuntree! We wanned to maek shur you wasnt a taeroist!

And wait a minute, how do you "reload your own ammo"?

To take paranoia away. Walmart stores catalog a list of "commonly theft/easily stolen" items. These items are locked away if possible and are required to be escorted to a cashier or paid for immediately. If they let people walk around with ammo boxes, people would take the bullets out of the box, put them in their pockets and walk out.

Couple this with the possibility that the clerk wasn't able to access the sporting goods register, and you probably have your explanation.

Diabetic testing strips and Prilosec OTC can't be used in guns, or even to cook meth. But we HAVE lost our shirt having them stolen, so the company makes us keep them behind the pharmacy counter with the Oxycontin and Sudafed... ;)

The OP did say he had to hunt someone down to open it up, right? The ONLY time I couldn't pay for my ammo at the SG counter was when I had to go find a random employee to get it for me. Though I don't recall him tailing me to the front.

I've bought ammo at 4 different Wal-Marts in 2 different states and not had a bad experience yet....

Uhhhhh....What does your first sentence have to do with the last two?

BTW - We "lovingly" refer to Loss Prevention where I work as "The Gestapo," since they're more focused on internal than external theft too.

This is everywhere. I was at Best Buy last night and my 45 year old friend bought a rated Mature 17 computer game. The guy at the counter carded him to make sure he was over 17.

Please PM me with the website address where I can buy 100 rds. of Winchester 9mm brass for $12.88 ($128.80 per case) with free shipping. I don't care if I have to buy 5 cases at once, if I can get it cheaper I'll split it up with friends.

better yet, reload your own...

I've been discussing this with the local RO who's has experience in reloading, I'm probably 2-3 weeks away. I just need to find a suitable location to store everything. I have a 1 y/o so I would feel comfortable having it around the house, plus the wife would kill me.

Never had that happen at my Wal Mart and I buy ammo all the time. I pay at the sporting good checkout, they hand me a sack and receipt, and I wander around the store buying whatever else it is I need.

Weird.
