Wal-Mart in La Plata, MD calls security on my friend for trying to buy too much ammo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got off the phone with my friend. He was at the Wal-Mart in La Plata, MD looking for pistol ammo. Lo and behold they had 9mm in stock, Limit 6. So he bought 6 boxes, and when his girlfriend went to buy six boxes they said, "whoa, we can't do that," and called security. The security comes over and informs him that her buying the ammo would constitute a "straw purchase." Despite the stupidity of the Wal-Mart staff, he chose to leave rather than escalate the situation. This is pretty much the dumbest Wal-Mart story to date.

I was in the Super Walmart on Quaterfield Rd, Glen Burnie, MD last week and the guy at the counter claims the reason for the 6 box limit is because some dealers are send 3 people in and buying all the 9mm ammo.

Ridiculous but technically it was a "straw purchase" she was buying for someone else who couldn't. No it wasn't an ATF prohibited straw purchase nor was it illegal. The same terminology applies to buying your 16 year old kid a car and having a loan on it in your name for him. --Once again not illegal and very frequent but still a straw purchase.

I hate purchase caps. They are ridiculous. If I have 100 boxes of ammo I want them sold. It doesn't matter if one person, six people, or 25 people buy those 100 boxes. First come first served. Buy one or all.

With short supply and low prices product is sold quickly. If Walmart raised prices to control demand, there wouldn't be as much shortage in their store. When demand comes down, price comes down, back to normal.

Well, he was trying to pull a fast one, no? I wasn't there so I don't know what was said or done to prompt calling security and maybe it was an over-reaction.

You do understand the logic behind the limit? If there is no limit, the first guy there buys everything and then you complain that there's nothing left for you. How do they win?

All your friend had to do was go along with the policy and there's no problem. If he doesn't like the policy he is free to shop elsewhere.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath and relax regarding this current ammo situation. Getting mad or trying to cheat the system isn't going to help.

The best thing for everybody to do is stop buying ammo for a few weeks and let supply catch up with demand.
