I went to wally world tonight to pick up a couple of Federal 550-rd value packs, and after the cashier stared at my ID for at least twenty seconds without saying a word (awkward), I was expecting the usual "for rifle or for handgun?" question. I usually say rifle, pay for the goods, and I'm on my way. Usually.

Tonight the cashier told me "I can't sell this to you, you need to be over 21". I asked why and he said "because this (referring to .22LR) can be used in both rifles and handguns". Then he said "they're cracking down" (whatever that means), and after trying to explain to him that I'm still over 18 and legal to buy rifles and rifle ammo, and explaining that pistols can shoot rifle rounds and rifles can shoot pistol ammo, he wouldn't change his mind about selling me the ammo.

Normally I would just go to another Wal-Mart (even though going to W-M is a chore in itself), however I've had a hard time finding the Federal 550-round value packs these past couple of days, as they sell VERY fast around here. I'm only frustrated because I finally found a Wal-Mart that had this particular ammo in stock and was denied the purchase. This was a Wal-Mart I almost never go to, mind you, so I'll hopefully never run into this again.

I stopped at the W-M by my house, and they would've been happy to sell me my Federal .22LR, if they had any. :banghead:

Go to the manager point out where the box says long rifle
Although it is legal for you to buy the ammo it's their discretion whether or not to sell it to you.

go to a different cashier.

I worked at walmart for a bit and some of the cashiers arent the brightest bulbs in the box.

Most places, if you get a manager, and argue long enough, will give in. They'll hate you, and talk about you after you've left, but who cares? You got your ammo.

Did you point out that the type of firearm it's for is printed on the box? .22 LR - Long Rifle. Trust me, it'll work on one or two employees in almost any local store. Just make sure you pick the right counter to check out.

The poor clerk. It's the only power he's likely to ever have, and you guys want the manager to take it away.

Kidding aside, next time get the manager.

When asked the "handgun or rifle" question, I once answered that I was going to use the .22lr cartridges for an art project...you know, kind of like a macaroni picture frame.

The guy wouldn't sell me the ammo. I had to argue with him for almost 5 minutes. He finally did sell it to me after I told him it was for a rifle.

I can't complain, because I was giving the guy a hard time, but I just don't like the policy. He still made me answer the question even though I'm over 21.

As much as most of you guys gripe about Arky-Mart I'd think you just wouldn't go there.

im lucky enough to have a gun shop that will sell ammo for cheaper than wal mart. ive been asked the same question though and have simply learned to make friends with the clerks that are always back there.

Yet another reason to avoid China-Mart.

Oh,what we will put up with for a good price,(sigh). It just goes to show that our loyalty has a price. Buy ammo from a gun shop, at least they appreciate (well, most do)your business.

Wal mart sucks, they didn't want to sell me ammo once when I was 16 (this was 13 years ago). Found the manger who was a friends dad that I often hunted with, walked out with my box of shotgun shells and a smile!

Still hate Wal mart though.

Blame the law makers not the store who sells the product.

Pardon? There is no law that says you can't sell any particular cartridge to anyone over the age of 18. There are laws (maybe they vary from state to state) that say if ammo is intended to be used in a handgun, the buyer must be 21. This is why some chain stores like wacky world ask if you're going to use the ammo for a rilfe or handgun. If you say hand gun then you have to be 21.

When I was5 they wouldn't let me buy a rifle either. I still hate them. :D

Just kidding.

i buy 223 and 40 at wally world all the time and i have never been asked rifle or handgun. Perhaps in FL it isnt a big deal.

For those that say go to a gun store and get ammo, the closest two g stores i have to me do not sell ammo because they cannot get it for what walmart does and therefore would have to price themselves out of the market. Just keep that in mind when yelling at the china mart customers

Thanks for the comments guys.

I was in a rush last night so I didn't have time to get a manager, however next time I will (and I emphasize the word next because it IS Wal-Mart afterall).

Would you care to place a bet on that, sir? (Read United States Code Title 18, Part I, § 922(b)(1) before placing your bet.)

I would. Anything that has or can be chambered in a rifle can be bought as rifle ammunition. Doesn't matter that it can be used or is primarily used as pistol ammo, if you own a rifle in that caliber you may legally purchase that ammo. :)

I think it stinks that you couldn't buy your ammo, but the salesperson was erring on the side of caution. The are almost as many 22 handguns as there are rifles and since he wasn't sure which you were using, he decided to refuse you the sale. I understand his position, but then that is when you go one step higher in the feeding scale.

When the dumbo's passed the laws, they felt they were written in the absolute, but just didn't stop to think. So, whats new?
