Actually, Rangel is telling a DOCUMENTED LIE.

His claims about the socio-economic background of service members are every bit as much of a lie as anything David Duke has ever said.

Personally, I think Rangel's in the early stage of Alzheimer's.

Conscript armies are vile, stupid and incompetent. It's bad enough with the Army lowering standards as is.

Watch "Saving Private Ryan" again and when they do the assault on Omaha Beach try to remember that you are watching a "Conscript Army".

If we ever get into another war that deserves to be fought, I only hope that we can find the "citizens" with the gonads to repeat that performance.

Just last week I read Hogeland's book The Whiskey Rebellion. George Washington led his troops just past Carlisle, near Bedford, then turned around to return to Philadelphia for the start of the legislative session, against several of the moderates' wishes for his presence to calm the agitations of both the leaders of the rebellion and the militia he led to quell it. Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury, and somehow "acting" as Secretary of War in his absence led the troops.

Yup. The armed forces are made up mostly of middle class kids and so forth.

No, you're watching a bunch of actors earning their checks.

The draft is dead for a wide array of reasons. Bringing it back would be like bringing cart horses back because we have a shortage of Humvees. Plus, it's not something the President can do on his own. And there's no way Congress would approve it barring another 9/11 or a bunch of Chinese nukes.

As far as a "national service" system, I wonder if you folks are aware that it's prime purpose is to mold the people into good subjects of the socialist state. These programs go hand-in-glove with other socialist programs. Far from making people into stern, square-jawed manly men, these programs get them used to both taking orders from the state and getting their grub from the state.

I keep seeing stories and comments that allude to a return of the draft. If so, it's about time. We won't stop making stupid decisions about war until the sons and daughters of some our leaders are in the line of fire.
