Are Bullpup Design not considered Pistol Grip, therefore not Assault Weapon?

Pistol grips are usually defined in the laws a little something like "a conspicuously protruding pistol grip which places the entirety of the hand (or the web of the hand, something like that) below the axis of the bore".

Why wouldn't a bullpup's pistol grip qualify?

They're fairly rare and I kick myself for not spending the $1300 to get the one I looked at brand new,but Steyr made a small number of USR's with what could be described as a thumbhole bullpup configuration stock in order to meet import/AWB requirements.

guys gotta remember, im some communist states like MD and NY, a thumbhole stock is considered a pistol grip too.
