Hey guys -

I'm deployed to the Gulf right now but I'll be home in a couple of weeks. I have an AR-15 being built for me, and I'm trying to get an idea what ammo prices are like right now.

Can anyone tell me what .223 is running at Walmart (easy access)? I heard that prices have gone up quite a bit since I've been gone (9mm went from $12 to $15 for a Valupak). I just wondered what kind of sticker shock I'm in for!

While I'm at it -- what are the opinions on different weight bullets? 55 gr vs 62 gr?

Thanks!

Jim

Last time they even had WWB in stock, it was about $6-something for a box of 20.

Surplus you can still get cheaper. Sportsman's Guide still had some 720rd cans of Radway Green M855/SS109 for $169.

I've seen some high priced stuff at Academy for $12 per box of 20. But, I guess that was match quality or something.

I don't have an AR, but I was just comparing AR ammo prices to my PS90's ammo prices. I happened to notice it a couple of weeks ago...

Watch the Guatemalan stuff...while it's excellent and clean ammo, the lot conditions vary widely. Battlepacks okay IF they're sealed, but I've seen mid-90's lots in boxes that range from polished brass to some that look like they were under saltwater, corroded like an old battery. Which, as someone mentioned, with a hurricane, they possibly were.

Navy, first of all, THANK YOU for your service to our nation.

If you can find true M193 (55 grain bullet), get it. Not all 55 grain bullets are M193. I am an old grunt from Nam,68 4th Inf, and i can attest the M193 does what it should.
Welcome Home, Byron

Byron -

Thanks for the kind words -- it will be nice to get home!

And thanks to everyone else for the info. I've been checking the "usual" places and I think I'm getting a pretty good idea of what it will cost me to feed my new "baby".

Good thing I've been able to save some of my pennies out here!

Jim

Was at my local ammo store yesterday. He had 80 rd bags of Federal Lake City 55gr, which has been my standard. 27 bucks per bag. I almost fell over. Anyway I bought some Barnaul (spelling?) at 3.50 a box to give a try. Desperate times I quess. Thank God I saved all the LC brass. Gonna have to dust off the .223 dies. Bill

P.S. Thanks for your service, I did it, my wife did it and my dad did it. Three big thank you's from one household. Be Safe!

I was just wondering the same thing that navyguy was asking, what is the difference between 55 grain and 62?

7 grains.

Hate to be a smartass, but without comparing two specific bullets of those weights, that's really the only difference. Faster twist rates will tend to favor the heavier bullets, but almost all available barrels will shoot either 55 or 62 just fine.
