Jonathan Rowan was in U.S. illegally

SEATTLE Immigration officials said tonight that a man who killed a woman on the University of Washington campus on Monday and then killed himself had lived in the United States illegally for more than 10 years.

41-year-old Jonathan Rowan was a British citizen. The woman killed was 26-year-old Rebecca Griego, Rowan's ex-girlfriend.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman says Rowan arrived legally at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport in March 1996, carrying his visa waiver he obtained as a British citizen. That allowed him to stay in the country for 90 days. He used the name Jonathan Rowan.

After the 90 days expired, Rowan was in the country illegally, but he remained in the United States, staying almost underground.

Rowan worked odd jobs, including buying and selling cars and setting up Web sites. He had aliases and fake passports. He lived in homes that were destined for demolition, so he moved frequently.

A birth certificate with a seal of England shows Rowan was born on March 13th, 1966, in the County of Leicester and identifies him as the son of a welder.

Spokeswoman Lorie Dankers says immigration officials got tips several years ago that Rowan was in the U.S. illegally and investigated. But immigration agents couldn't find him.

Immigration agents prepared an administrative immigration warrant for Rowan's arrest when he wasn't found. But he eluded them.

Seattle police arrested Rowan for drunken driving on June 30th, 2006. But city law forbids Seattle police from inquiring about immigration status, unless the officer has a reasonable suspicion that person is in the United States illegally.

Wonder if SPD will change their policy now on illegal immigrants?

I wondered the same thing. (answer: no) I'd even settle for some meaningful self-reflection amongst the population on this subject.

Probably too much to ask...

Wonderful...

Actually, I think the majority of Evergreen Staters still get it. Tacoma Mall shooting, Capital Hill massacre, Jewish Community Center massacre, and most still seem to be holding to the notion that new gun control legislation won't fix any of these.

There's a handful of extremists in Seattle, and filling up the Eastside, who think Washington State would be just swell if they could find a way to ramrod more restrictive gun control thru Olympia.

Eternal vigilance and all.

GOAL Alert 5-2007 5 April 2007

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

In a last desperate attempt to pass SB 5197, the alleged "gun show
loophole" bill, and at the urging of the Seattle gun control crowd, the
Senate has opened the telephone and e-mail "tree" to calls asking that
the bill be pulled to the Senate floor for a vote. Senators are already
receiving calls and e-mails demanding a full Senate vote be taken on SB
5197.

This kind of last-minute chicanery is similar to the trickery used last
year, when Washington Ceasefire was given advance notice that a hearing
was to be held on the gun show bill, while full public disclosure was
delayed for two additional days (and after the weekly schedule had been
published).

SB 5197 died in Senate Rules because there was not sufficient support to
bring the bill up for a floor vote. Washington Ceasefire and its cronies
in the Senate won’t take "no" for an answer. They want to ram the bill
through at any cost. As has happened with previous gun control
legislation, the bill’s supporters and possibly Democrat leadership will
put pressure on rural and swing district Democrats to support a Senate
floor vote on SB 5197.

THIS CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.

A SMALL NUMBER OF EXTREMIST GUN CONTROL PROPONENTS IS BEHIND THIS. THEY
DO NOT REMOTELY REPRESENT A MAJORITY OF VOTERS IN THIS STATE.

TWO SEPARATE U.S. GOVERNMENT STUDIES SHOW GUN SHOWS ARE NOT A SOURCE OF
GUNS FOR CRIMINALS. IN THE LATEST FBI STUDY, NOT A SINGLE FIREARM
INVOLVED IN THE STUDY CAME FROM A GUN SHOW.

THE SO-CALLED "GUN SHOW LOOPHOLE" IS A SOLUTION TO A NON-EXISTENT
PROBLEM. IT WILL ACTUALLY KILL GUN SHOWS AND SILENCE OUR POLITICAL VOICE.

SEATTLE ALLOWS ILLEGAL ALIENS TO ROAM ITS STREETS AT WILL, KILLING
PEOPLE. THE LAST THREE POLICE OFFICERS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN
EASTERN WASHINGTON WERE KILLED BY ILLEGAL ALIENS. BUT THE SEATTLE GUN
BAN GANG WANTS TO BLAME LAW-ABIDING GUN OWNERS? FOCUS ON THE REAL
PROBLEMS, NOT MEANINGLESS SYMBOLISM.

Democrat OR REPUBLICAN, PRO- OR ANTI-GUN, THEY NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU
IMMEDIATELY. SB 5197 MUST BE KILLED NOW!

There is a whole bunch of info about illegal aliens on newsflashradio.com and there's stuff about all the non-Mexican aliens. This story just seems to support the information that not all illegal alien criminals are hispanic. Too bad our political leaders didn't pay closer attention to the non-main stream media.

Seattle police arrested Rowan for drunken driving on June 30th, 2006. But city law forbids Seattle police from inquiring about immigration status, unless the officer has a reasonable suspicion that person is in the United States illegally.

Pretty obvious local officials should be held accountable for this tradegy. If they'd done a check for all outstanding warrants on this guy, they likely could have picked him up, handed him over to ICE, and eventually deported him. AND saved a life. Gun control? How about immigration control?:banghead:

Where did Rowan get the gun?

Apparently stolen from a roommate... who "carelessly left it in a dresser drawer." "Carelessly" or "judiciously?" Only adults living in the home, no need to have it locked away. Especially living in greater Western Washington, home of the hime invasion robbery. Especially if there's a known druggie living there (Rowan was a cocaine user and allegedly a small time pusher). But the latest from Comrade Dave Ross and his ilk is that this incident points out the need for mandatory secure storage.

Texas
This just illustrates how ineffectual Gun Control laws are.
They are often quite effective – once you understand who the target is. Look at your sig line:
We want to see a drastic reduction in gun ownership across the world
Nothing there about crime, is there? England counts as a rousing success, in Ms. Peters view. The fact that crime is up is really irrelevant.

Why arent the minutemen standing vigil at the airports?
You already know the answer to this, but I'll answer anyway: because international airports in the U.S. are staffed with Customs agents to inspect baggage, and Immigration agents to check passports and visas.

If it was only that easy here in SoCAl. There was a recent lawsuit to stop counties from detaining illegals solely because of their status. My county just implemented an almost full time position for an ICE qualified employee to only check legal status of inmates. Guess what? Almost 1/3 of all names run so far are "illegal entry/reentry". ICE cannot take them all. (of course they should)

Well we have government agents at the borders. We call them the Border Patrol. They do essentially the same thing when entering the country.

How many Border Patrol agents do we have patrolling the 1951 mile Mexican border?
