Squirrel hunting with a revolver?

Find a big ol' Beech tree to sit under and wait. The grey bark really helps you spot the little tree rats.

Find Hickory Trees look for cuttings on the ground ( shell parts)
they also eat the seed out of pine cones
sit wait 15-20 min no fuzzy tails move .
I hunt with a Flintlock ,If I can get um I know you can
And,,,, ask your Grand dad, they are Tasty !!

I use a Ruger .22 auto pistol with a scope.

Squirrel Hunting

It's a lot of fun especially with a revolver!
I think my best advice is to find a good spot with hardwoods and wait. They will usually appear early and late day.
I try my best to stalk up within shooting range by using the surrounding trees as concealment and then zap 'em when they are not expecting it.

I took up handgun hunting when I found a great spot (now my favorite hunting spot) in the mountains where I could hunt all sorts of game. I especially like to hunt for quail and gray tree squirrels. Well, you can't legally (or efficiently) hunt quail with anything but a shottie and it's hard to carry a rifle and a shotgun, so I decided to take up handgun hunting.

After several different weapons and combinations of scopes and red dots, I've narrowed it down to a Buckmark with a red dot and a Single Six with a 2x Burris.

Two thinks to keep in mind; You'll need a good something to rest on when using the 2x scope. Tree, stump, large rock, hood, etc.

The other thing I've found useful is heyper velocity ammo. 30 grain Aguilas chrono over 1650 fps out of my handguns and give near rifle trajectory in 75 yards or less. I've taken squirrel at about 65 yards with the scoped ruger.

Tip:
Drill a hole in two quarters near the top, and slip a length of rawhide to hold these and hang off your weak hand pinkie finger.

Rub these quarters, just a bit, work it, and watch. Old Bushy tail will come around that tree, or trim limb, as he cannot stand to NOT look to see.
Drop this "call" onto weak hand pinkie and you take a two hand hold and pop him with a revolver.

I was born in 1955, Mentors and Elders were doing this before I was born...

I have a Ruger Single Six in 17hmr with a scope on it, and also a Ruger Mark III with a red dot scope on it. I hunt for squirrels and rabbits with these. The Ruger with red dot scope can be handheld with some accuracy for sitting animals within 20 yards or so. The Ruger Single Six "HUnter" model revolver, when a 2x-6x scope is put on it, is too heavy to be very effective completely handheld. HOwever I have found that if I put it on some type of rest, like a bipod or tripod or a tree branch, etc, that I can shoot accurately out to a suprising distance...about 40 yards for a small mammal.

Right now I'm having trouble hunting tree squirrels with anything because there are not many of them I'm finding in the places I'm exploring. Rabbits have been easier to find.

Take a tall hiking staff with you ...Hold with off hand and place pistol over wrist to steady your shot .

its really fun to use a large caliber handgun, or rifle. but the object of the game is to not shoot the squirrel. but to shoot the tree behind it. think its called " barkin squirrles" kinda fun.

I've used a S&W 48 22 mag for just this type of small game in thick cover where you're not likely to get beyond 50-60 feet. Very effective and lots of fun.

I have really good luck hunting creek banks. Corn + hardwoods + water = rodents as thick as fleas on a dog.

Yes, I have hunted squirrel with a handgun, but not revolver. I hunt with a T/C Contender G2. I can simply say, 1 shot, 1 kill. Use either iron sights or a reddot sight. Scopes are okay. Squirrels are usually on the move or still for so little, that I like the reddot.

I hunt squirrels with handguns -- from my Ruger MK II automatic, to my Colt Officer's Model Target revolver, to my Colt Woodsman, to my Colt M357 (the latter with .38 Special wadcutter loads.)

I don't use optical sights, just the irons. I simply walk slowly along a wooded ridge with water on both sides and keep my eyes and ears open.
