Handgun Scope for squirrels

I have a Taurus Tracker .22LR pistol that I want to use for plinking and maybe shooting a squirrel or rabbit. For this application, which is best, a handgun scope or a red dot scope?

I would presume since it's just a .22 that even a chep scope would work?

Break the mold! If you want extraordinary accuracy, forget the handgun scopes and get a low to medium powered rifle scope on your pistol. Do some searching of the silhouette shootists. You'll see what I mean. The recoil is so low with this caliber that the matter of 3.5" to 4.0" of eye relief will be a non-issue. This is for medium to long range shooting.

If you want to stick to traditional pistol scopes, I suggest the T/C Arms scopes. They are awesome quality and are priced right. It depends on distance that you intend to shoot.

Hard to beat the Leupold EER handgun scopes. 2x will work for you, but you might want to get a variable since it is a 22 and you are looking at small targets. I tend to like the low powered scopes since your shots are close and the scope is just used for more precise aiming rather than "scoping the target" as you often do with a rifle. The field of view is really reduced in the higher powered ones. Get yourself some good binoculars and you will be all set for tree rats.

I would not put a scope on the gun for rabbit hunting. You will likely not be able to take a shot at a running bunny wabbit.
