As soon as I got my first gun (15) I kept it under my mattress with 7 loaded mags.

I once read that black powder guns were not considered firearms by the ATF so I built a 45 caliber persussion muzzle loading pistol from a kit when I was 17.

I kept it loaded in my car. (probably wasn't technically legal at the time)

My question is: When did you first decide to keep a gun close by for defensive purposes?

never. i have faith in my local law enforcement authorities to provide assistance in times of distress.

baaaaaah baaaaaaaah

:D alright im a lying B###h. prolly when i moved out on my own.

8-dad gave me my first firearm, a single shot 20 gauge. Couldn't leave it loaded, but the shells were close. He worked nights....

A weapon or a firearm.

I have kept a weapon near me at all times since about 12 or so. I think I was born with a knife as standard equipment. Usually is some kind of folder on my person at all times along with a utility knife of some kind. I have also been known to keep a Kukri(sp?) pretty close by also.

As for firearms, for about 3 1/2 years.

Course there is that Calvary Pike, crossbow and trebuchet:what:

12. .22 pistol in the nightstand. Would of had it a few years earlier if I had the dough. Dad's .357 kept me safe until then. :)

officaly? as soon as my wife decided guns were fun and let me keep one loaded.

unofficaly as soon as I brought it home.

(now it's a rush to who would get to it first...)

Three years.

Since 1757. That was a previous life, but powder got wet and the Iroquois got me. But that's another story.

I wasn't raised around guns when I 'came of age' I was living in Wisconsin and just didn't give much thought to the RKBA. So, I first started giving it thought in the Fall of 2001 (imagine that :( )

HD? About 2 1/2 years for guns. Baseball bats, knives, other, a bit longer.

Carry? Few, almost no, regular people get CCW here. I did carry Mace about a decade ago when it was legal (I ended up giving it to a female friend who lived in NJ and was worried about some of the train stations she'd have to go through to get home from college). I've carried a knife or pepper spray most of the time for about 2 years now.

Since I got back from Nam in 1968. That's where I realized just how easy it is to get oneself hurt and/or killed.

Since 1959 or 60. Bought my first handgun when I was in Jr high school. Legal then! Kept it under my matress and carried it some-NOT to school.

I don't. Since I don't live in a high crime area, I don't see a need to "get ready" for anything. It must be great to live in Texas -- I didn't get a gun until recently -- August 2002 -- and my parents wouldn't even allow me to get a knife at fifteen, forget about a firearm...they still don't know I have two....

In my city and state, I can't carry concealed or otherwise so what's the point? For me it's like get ready for what? The gun range?
