hi guys, i live in PA but my son lives in Maryland and i travel a lot to visit him and i was wondering how to go about getting a carry permit, i already have one in PA, anyone with any knowledge or info would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I think you're looking at impossible

getting a non-resident carry permit there just doesn't happen. I have a friend who is a state senator and he can't even get a resident CCW

CCW in Maryland? HA!

You'd have 2 chances... Slim 'n None. I've read where PA is now an 'open carry' state... (other than Philly) Is that true? How does Philadlphia abrogate the state Constiution? I recall that sez: "The Right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." PERIOD!

Everybody is unfortunately correct. Even getting a resident permit is near impossible. The State Police has sole discretionary power in issuing permits and the criteria are very narrow and strict.

Maryland's a defacto police state, so only the police are allowed to carry guns in public. But, Governor Kaine, current Virginia head of state, seems to be trying hard to get there too with his "suggestions of conclusions" to the VT review panel..

There is no CCW in Maryland.
Maybe that's why Baltimore is so safe!:
Baltimore Sun
"People have no respect for other human beings' lives, and we have to hit it at all ends," Dixon said. So far this year, 178 people have been killed in Baltimore, up from 149 last year at this time. This year, 423 people have been shot - 108 more than at the same time last year.

What foolishness reigns in the City of Baltimore?

Life is short enough that I'm not willing to risk a visit to find out.

I live ~30 miles south of B-more and haven't been inside the Baltimore Beltway in several years.....and thats not by accident!

What a hole!

Yeah, its a pleasant place to live.
/sarcasm

but I'm stuck here for the forseeable future, so we'll keep fighting the good fight.

I've met one person who has a Maryland permit. We always kid him about how he must be related to the governor or something. It's next to impossible for a resident to get one; a non-resident will not get one - I don't believe there's even a way for a non resident to apply.

Any citizen of the US may apply for a Maryland license. The question here is what is the magic bullet. I seem to remember there was a thread about it. I'll see if I can dig it up....

The dirty little secret is that MD already has something like 20,000 active permits. the point of the discussion needs to be centered around the criteria of how those permits are issued.

In MD, unlike most normal states, there is very little objective criteria for how those permits are issued.

I may be over simplifying, but it essentially comes down to some person sitting in the MD State Police saying, "Approved"......."eh.......Not disapproved".

That is the thing that organizations like Maryland Shall Issue are trying to address.

Baltimore City, in about 2 months it will be home (why couldn't the Jewish community be just a little further out in Owings Mills or someplace safer?). Well, I'll just be doubly sure that I get to the range more often to practice with my home defense pistols and shotgun, and I'll have to get back in the practice of carrying pepper spray and a knife when I can (working in a psych hospital and as a teacher in a school where in the first case it would get me fired, and the second could land me in jail, broke me of the habit).

Chaim,

When you move to Pikesville, you should be that much closer to the Hap Baker public firearms range in Westminster. The pistol range is currently open and we’re hoping the new (reconstructed) rifle range will be open by mid-September. Unfortunately, I don’t think you can shoot a shotgun at the range unless you’re using slugs.

And yes, no widely available CCW in MD sucks. I plan on getting my Florida and Utah non-resident permits and then scooting in the back door to a PA non-resident permit too.

Matt

Chaim,
if you're moving to Pikesville, I spent a few years living there myself...its the nicest area I've seen in Baltimore, frankly.

And continental is just up the road. ;)

There may be 20,000 permits but I belive a third of those or "inactive" meaning the person no longer has a job that requrires a permit. The remainder are very restricted. The two I've seen were while transporting part of his gun collection the other was while on the job. Most of the others limit carry between bank, home and work.

Florida Non-resident permits are recognized by PA now. There was a SNAFU by the State Police that was just cleared up by the AG last month.

Good luck getting a PA non-resident. You have to have a permit from your home state first, if available. Even though MD doesn't give them out, they are technically available.

Kharn's research a few years back showed that 98% or so of the 20K permits went to:
- retired LEOs
- active LEOs (shall-issue per written MSP policy)
- security guards/private detectives

There were only 500 or so personal protection permits among MD's 6 million residents.
