I have some questions about purchasing a AK 47 custom made rifle and having it transfered to Maryland ?
I know I have to fill out the pistol paper work as it is a regulated firearm , but what is the process does the person that is sending the firearm have to do anything other than get the FFL number of the place recieving it ?

I called one place and asked about transfering a ak they said it wouldn't be a probelm . Do I have to fill out the required paperwork first before I purchase it . Or do I purchase it first then find someone to do the transfer for me and then do the proper regulated firearm paperwork?

When transferring a firearm, you send your copy of the FFL to the shipper. The shipper then send the firearm to the address on the FFL. The FFL calls you to pick up your weapon. You go there, fill out the 4473, get the background check, and provided all goes well, you walk out the door with your gun.

Thanks that helps Daemon688.
I don't think I will have a probelm with the paper work cause I bought a handgun a couple months ago . Is it any different being as it's considered to be a "assult weapon"? I have always wanted one and I figured I would get one while I have money and before another ban comes into effect.

AK's (as well as AR's and a number of other long guns) are considered "regulated arms" here in Maryland, so you'd have to go through the same process to purchase one of them that you had to with your handgun. Fill out the 4473 and the assorted MD-specific forms (including the lame new one) and wait your 7-10 days, then, unless you're delayed or denied - go pick up your rifle.

Oh, you'll have to make due with 20-round mags. That is, unless you go out-of-state and buy them and bring them back. However, if you go that route, any hi-cap mags that you bring back can never be given away/traded/sold to any other resident of MD as that would constitute a transfer of a hi-capacity mag and open you up to legal badness under MD law. So if you want 'em, go out of state and buy all you want, keep the reciept somewhere safe, and hold onto 'em like gold, and you're good to go.

As far as FEDERAL law is concerned there's no limitations on buying "assault rifles" over state lines as described above.
The MAY be something in you state or even local laws about it, in which case you need to find out what those laws are.

The FFL Dealer doing the transfer for you will know what the laws are that might apply.
I'd find a dealer willing to receive the rifle and ask him. If there are no local or state laws, you're good to go.

Also, I'd like to point out that you should make sure the FFL dealer you interact with is familiar with the items you are dealing with.

I sold a Cetme to a guy in Maryland, and his FFL dealer (a pawn shop [not familiar with firearms at all, except by blue book]) didn't know what it was, called the alphabet boys and they impounded it for 3 months.

There are too many FFL licensees that have no business holding them.

Nailoth - Do you mind if I ask the name of the pawn shop you shipped to? I might be doing some transfer business with a pawn shop soon and I want to make sure it's not the one you're referring to.

I have purchased and sold a half dozen pistols and rifles via gunbroker.com over the past year or so. I would suggest searching ther list of ffl transfer dealers in your area. I found a guy that will transfer pistols and rifles for $20/transaction. My dealer says he does ~ 10-12 tranfers/week...not a bad side job!!!

Unless you have a class III, you might start calling your AKS what it is, not a -47, they are selective fire, and rare to collect
