A friend of mine has a Russian AK (preban – Milled receiver) in new condition. I think it has not been fired. Anyone know what this is worth $$$ ?

it would have to be a viet bring back in order to be a preban and it deffinetly wouldn't be in new condition........ there were none leagally importable from Russia, ya got a few choices vietnam bring back (very rare but did exist) it would also be a registered NFA full auto in this case, A Russian/PLO parts kit build from the kits imported in 1992 again these were totally wore out and the recievers were cut up........ the "preban" kills the PLO guns possibility, none were legally importable into the USA, there are milled Norinco prebans but zero russians especially unissued condition never as the only intact AK pattern guns EVER imported from russia are the Saiga sporter rifles and those are deffinetly not preban...... I'd say your friend is pullin your leg got pics?

I’ll do some more checking. It’s definitely not a Saiga. I’ve seen the Norinco’s, maybe this is what he has.

i once saw a czech ak with a tax stamp, don't know any more than that about it

99.9% of the time when someone says they have an Ak-47 in the US, it's a semiauto clone and not a real AK-47. Among NFA weapons it's much easier to get a Maxim or an M-2 heavy machine gun than it is to get a real, legal AK-47.

Point of fact, awhile ago there were a few Russian parts kits imported, and it could be a build.

But yes, assume it's just a WASR.

wrong, dstorm1911, I own a Russian VEPR .308win built at the Vyatsakie Polyany factory in 1997, definately a Kalishnakov operating system, milled receiver is based on the RPK machine gun and bolt has three locking lugs, Russia imported them after the Soveit breakup in an attempt to break into the american hunting rifle market and failed terribly

But it's not fully automatic (that's what dstorm1911 is getting at).

There is no such thing as a Czech AK, or even AK type rifle.

Their replacement for the vz.58 is an AK pattern rifle in 5.56mm.

But it will be years and years, if ever, before any of those, even in kit form, finds its way into the US.

VEPR .308win

Which does use the AK system, but is most certainly NOT a true AK-47. It's a commercial rifle built to satisfy the "sporting purpose" and other import requirements the Gipper put into place. You'd have to move heaven and earth to get a new production AK-47 imported here legally. They're banned outright at the border.

Polytech IS Norinco!!!! Same factory!!

nope. Norinco is factory 66 in triangle, 26 in a triangle or "Norinko 66" . Polytech is 386 in a circle or 416 in a triangle.

i believe, 36 in triangle is also norinco
but not sure

davepool...... PREBAN..... is your AK a pre 1989 Russian AK? just love it when folks don't bother to read the entire post before tossin out SA comments.... PREBAN would be the key word your ONLY option for PREBAN would be Norinco or a very few maadis which were junk, a few VERY rare Yugo Amigos

I was the importer of the Russian/PLO kits there were about 700 suitable for building however NONE of those would be PREBAN we didn't even start sellin em to distributers until after the 1994 ban took effect, I'd have to check the records but I think the first kits were sold in 1996 (at $350 ea sure wish still had a few as they are going for $1250+ nowdays)

A couple years ago, Sportsman's Guide was selling AK Parts kits that they advertised as being Russian made. Maybe the gun was a build built with one of those parts kits?

Whoops, keyboard sysdlexia. Yeah, I meant 86. Most commonly these days, when I hear pre-ban, people are talking about pre-AWB (currently moot) stuff.
