Any Sig P228 fans ?

What's with the "silver" on the first picture? Is the gun not camo finished on the surface of that one part? Hopefully I'm not seeing things correctly as I have one of these on order and may have to re-think it....

I don't think its "silver". I think it the polished blue finish on the mag release catching the light from that angle. It'll appear "black" like the barrel hood and hammer but it will probably be more polished.

The camo is nice but I like the basic black. 228 is just great. It eats what I feed it and has never given me a problem! Yes, I am a big fan!

Are the 228 and 229 the same thing, just different calibers? Or otherwise, what are the differences between the two?

Main thing I want to know is do they both feel the same in the hand?

Thanks.

Sorry for the pix quality . I was in a hurry last night after we closed the store . I usually like to take them in daylight outside .
The "silver" is a reflection off the backside of the mag release caused by the camera flash . It's black .

I would also like to know the difference between the 228 and 229...

The camo finish is....horrible! Definitely not my cup of tea..

The P228 is a very nice gun, two complaints I have:

1. I find it to be way overpriced.
2. The levers on the left are unorthodox relative to most other designs.

That's one of the things I like about SIGs. Very easy to drop the slide one-handed without shifting my grip. I like the decocker location as well.

I also like the sound they make when you drop the slide on a loaded mag - more of a "whoosh" than a "kerchunk".

I thought Sig stopped producing 228's.
I had also heard this, and I just recently recommended a 229 to a relative...if I had known the 228's were available, I would have recommended that. Not that I know the difference, but you don't have to read too many threads like this one to get the picture.

P228's are not catalogged here in the US anymore .
However , they still make them and will import them when distributors request them . I just purchased these factory new pistols for our store , 2 P228 camos , 2 in black and a P225 which is also not catalogged . Gun companies don't always import every item they offer . Some seem to be more "Euro" I guess or whatever their marketing dept tells them .n

This as a simplified difference between 228 & 229 .
The P228 has the stamped metal slide with the breech block pinned into place . It comes in 9mm .
The P229 has a solid steel slide . The added strength allows them to chamber it in 9mm as well as the more powerful 40SW & 357Sig .

They have basically the same physical measurements .
The 228 is lighter and sometimes preferred for a 9mm carry piece .
The 229 if you prefer a larger cartridge .

As for SIG controls being in the "wrong" place. I couldn't disagree more. I think the controls are in exactly the right places as they don't require me to shift my grip more than I need to compared to others. That's one of the things that attracted me to SIG's in the first place. To me, controls on most other autos seem to be in the "wrong" places. And since I use the sling shot technique a la Glock and don't have too high a thumb on my grip, the only control I need concern myself in a defense situation is the decocker.

And if your local gun dealer tells you SIG P228's aren't available to the general public (like Colt's), its time to find a better dealer.:D

I whole-heartedly feel that the Sig P228 is one of the most consistantly shootable guns that I have encountered. I have been distracted over the last month with a new CZ 75B .40S&W, so I need to get some quality rangetime in with the P228 in the next week or so.

The P228 is indeed back on the civilian market as most LEO/military orders have been filled. Most LEO pistol changeouts taking place now pertain to .40 caliber pistols so the P228 is not a contender here.

There are some who felt Sig 'ignored' the civilian market with the P228 when these lucrative contracts came there way, and they are not so pleased...they made the P229 available though and I actually prefer this as I find it to be very accurate in .40 S&W.

The SIG controls are exactly in the right place for me also. I shoot left handed most of the time and find the controls great.

Thanks so much for the pic. I can't wait until mine comes in. Not normally a finish I'd have on my guns but I have plenty of other guns and wanted something "different".

Already bought me three MecGar flush fitting 15 round mags for it!!!! :D

If the 229 is a stronger version of the 228, what advantages are there to the 228? If you want a 9mm, why not get a 229 in 9mm?

I'm planning to get either a 228 or 229 in 9mm soon, and would like to know any advantages the 228 offers.

I like the P229 because of the stronger slide, so I bought that in 9mm instead. But basically the same design as the P228. I have no plans on shooting .40 or .357SIG, but its nice to know the slide was made stronger to take it. I can shoot any 9mm +P ammo I want.

Some people say the P228 balances better in the hand, but I find my P229 is perfect with a full magazine. On an empty magazine, sure, the P228 may be a little better, but what good is that?! :D

If SIGs have a downside, it's their finishes - all of them. Their blue is pretty delicate especially.

One quick trip to Arizona Response Systems fixes that. I highly recommend the Advanced Tactical package.

(Just a happy customer)

I've had this one for several years and like it quite a bit. (And who cares if the thread was an old one?

Doesn't really bother me. But it was so old that I had to go back and find my post to refresh my memory. I searched long and hard for a decent condition 228 several years back. My local guy told me they couldn't get them and then the very next week brought in a 229 9mm, which I happily went home with. Still, I may pick up a nice 228 if I happen upon one. I'm told the balance on the 229s in 9mm isn't quite right.

Nice gun, BTW. How old is it?
