I never would have imagined one could find a nearly-perfect 1911, right out of the box for under 1 grand, much less one that could double as a hunting arm.

I am still kinda shocked.

I was looking at Cabela's and I spotted this rather strange looking commander-style gun. When I examined it, I discovered it was a DW COMMANDER CLS BOBTAIL in 10mm AUTO. It even comes with NS standard!

The fit, finish, trigger, safety everything was excellent. It has very nice grips and checkering and an interesting, well, bob. Is this a fluke or have I just found the best kept secret in handgunning?

Does anybody else have one? Is it as accurate as it is beautiful?

I think I just found my next MUST HAVE! Everybody, check these baby's out. Seem like a tremendous value and might be ther perfect 1 gun.

Shhh! Don't give the secret away!

You will find the .45ACP version a bit cheaper than that. Really good pricing for a pistol built with match-grade parts. Bobtailed as well.

Those are excellent-looking 1911s! (I've seen only the .45ACP version, had forgotten they make it in the completely obsolete, irrelevant 10mm format, which no one wants, and for which there is no need* ;))

And Dan Wesson is owned by Cz, now, is that correct? So you could have Carlito Brigante's preferred sidearm brand in a gun backed by the makers of one of the original Wuendernines ;)

Does anybody else have one?

Yep! I just got one and will be taking it to the range tomorrow night. :D

The features I like best are the Bobtail and that it is built like a Colt Combat Commander. I kinda wish they made one in blue.

It seems to be a really nice gun for the money.

Range report please!

Marshalldodge, I am wondering how the shooting session went. Did she shoot great? Is she shooting to POI with 180 grainers? Hows the recoil? I bet it is less robust than the 10mm model 20s. Pistolero, I guess your secret has been well kept, cuz I had never seen or heard of one before. I used to hear about DW revolvers from time to time but not 1911s. I am glad to see a company that does the 1911 right without charging a bunch of money for "customizing" that is needed to make the pistols run well in the first place, like proper fit and quality parts. And I am even happier by DWs choice to chamber this nice little gun in the 10mm as well as the .45. I have not been so tempted by a 1911 in a verrry looong time.

I forgot to mention in my original post that mine is a 45ACP.
There are more reviews over here:

It shoots really well. Right out of the box I was shooting 200 grain semi-wadcutters with no failures. The trigger is a little heavier than my pre-series II Kimbers but crisp and probably about right for a CCW. The Novak night sights are very nice.

Targets placed at 25 feet.
My first string, it is definitely shooting to the left:

I had never seen or heard of one before.
I hadn't either, until I first got into the market for a 10mm 1911 in late '06. The folks at the gun shop said the DWs were great, even though they recommended the Kimber -- which is what I ended up getting first. But the Dan Wesson in my experience is every bit the equal of the more expensive Kimber, although if I had it to do over again I'd still have gotten the Stainless Target II because I really like it too. But something tells me at least one more Dan Wesson is in my future. :D

They really are great pistols. The one I handled had a better trigger than the Ed Brown or Les Baer. A real bargain.

Mine is a .45 ACP, this gun even cycles empty brass! Load the mag with empties and cycle the slide. Weird! A couple of failures to lock the slide back on empty mag, I replaced the slide stop. I keep telling people, if you haven't felt the recoil of a bobtail in your hand with a .45 you don't know how nice a 1911 can feel. Of course it looks funny. :)

The title of this thread made me smile.

Using the word fondled to describe the experience of handling a 1911.

Then you scroll down the thread to the photograph and you hear yourself go "ooohh".

When you fall "in love" with a 1911, it's priceless. :p

What's the purpose of the "bobtail" ?
Aids in concealment. The overall length of a handgun is not so much the problem (for belt carry) as is the size of the butt. By cutting off the corner the butt, the gun is much less likely to print through a concealing garment.

To the thread starter......::cuss::....I was quite happy with my few 1911s, and I'm fortunate enough to have some nice ones, great shooters, then you go and post THAT!!!! Dang, that thing is purty....:D

I put a bobtail 10mm on hold last week, just waiting for my tax check. I had my heart set on a Kimber Grand Raptor II, but I believe the DW is a better gun for less money.

I planned on getting a "full size" but I have fairly small hands and found the lopped off corner of the bobtail very, very comfortable.

I can't wait to go shoot mine, should have it this week.

Sorry, I'm really excited...

I was hoping to pick up my DW CBOB yesterday or today, but found out that between the time my gun shop took my order and actually ordered the gun, on the same day, the distributor they used had sold all six they had in stock. :(

Will hopefully be picking it up this weekend. They appear to sell about as fast as they hit the shelf. I have heard nothing but great things about them.

My .45 CBOB is the tightest 1911 I've got. It's been 100% reliable as well. IMHO The CBOB is the best value out there in any 1911. No Series 80 or swartz firing pin block to worry about either:D.
