BARACK OBAMA

Obama; No Gun Shops Within Five Miles of Schools; Porn Shops Okay

I'm going to enjoy writing about a general election campaign against Barack Obama.

As Corner contributor Dave Kopel and David Bernstein note, Barack Obama proposed a few years ago a federal law against licensed firearms dealers operating within five miles of a school or park. As Kopel notes, "Every town I've ever visited which has more than a few dozen inhabitants has either a school or a park. Hypothesizing that the ban would apply to city parks (e.g., Central Park in New York City) but not to National Parks, pick a geographical region, and describe where a licensed firearms dealer could operate. Or pick a geographic point (e.g, Houston)and identify how far a peson would have to drive in order to get to the closest point where a gun store could legally be located. Extra credit for illustrative maps."

As the commenters noted, this would effectively ban gun shops from most of the country, and just about every city.

However, Obama appears to find another kind of establishment to be perfectly fine operating near your children's school:

Obama was also the sole present vote on a bill that easily passed the Senate that would require teaching respect for others in schools. He also voted present on a measure to prohibit sex-related shops from opening near schools or places of worship, which ultimately did not pass the Senate.

In both of those cases, his campaign said, he was trying to avoid mandates on local authorities.

The bill did not get the required three-fifths majority, so it did not in fact pass. (Mr. Obama voted “present” on the measure.)

Why on God's green earth does Barack Obama object to mandates on local authorities for porn shops but not for gun stores? Or conversely, why does he feel it's necessary to keep gun stores five miles from a school, but no limit on porn shops?

That man does not need to be around children, his own included.

Perhaps his reasoning was, "Better to be horny than dead"?

Curioser and curioser.

Cause you know, people who buy guns are dangerous, and we don't need those people anywhere near our schools and parks...

I think he would look less like a dumbass if he said that there would be no gang violence near or on schools within a five mile radius. Give all the PD's in the citys some funding, hire some more LEO's and help clean up the citys...

I'm not sure which is more dangerous, Hillary (competent politician, leftist, arrogant and lusting for power at all costs), Obama (Socialist verging on Communist, though incompetent, esp. concerning foreign affairs), or McCain (less of a collectivist than the other two, but will he stomp on our Second Amendment rights with the Same boots he stomped our First Amendment Rights in?)?

hmmm....5 miles from school or park? Well, I guess pretty much every town that I have lived in or seen in Nebraska would effectively put out of business. Since most high school students can't buy guns (18 and all...you know the law), this is pretty much just a way to destroy places to buy guns.

Does anyone really think that McCain wouldn't sell out the 2nd Amendment in a heartbeat? At least Obama won't try to ban porn "for the children".

I must admit, a porn shop will likely draw a more undesirable crowd perhaps than a gun store. At least in a gun store, people are trying to keep things from going off.....hyuk, hyuk....

Obama is an Illinois politician, from Chicago. They will do whatever they can to further push their 'agenda', which often consists of a mushy, unorganized concept of what the 'people' want. Illinois is a great example of a nanny state.

Obama spent lots of time in Chicago as a community organizer. He associates with Jesse Jackson.

Enough for me to know he is no "Change we can believe in". I still like Ron Paul, but I realize he is going nowhere. So, I will vote for John McCain. Is he perfect? No, but trust me, you want a politician from anywhere but Illinois.

Hey look! Another political thread not centered on guns (again...again... aga......)

Here's my thought.

In before the lock.

Like so many other anti-2nd Amendment laws, there is no reason to believe it would help deter crime. It's not like gun shops are ALLOWED TO SELL TO MINORS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!
:banghead:

I will now go and wrap my head in duct tape.

I believe that many anti-politicians and groups try to make gun stores out to be places where people, any people, walk in and are handed whatever they want without needing to pay or show ID or anything, I think if some of the gun-ignorant people in this country would just go buy one to see the process for themselves than this sort of ploy would be far less effective, and they would be seen more often as the jackanapes they are.

IBTL!!!

No, Illinois (especially Chicago) is NOT a "nanny state". It's a BULLY state where the machinery of government exists to control and oppress. In Chicago especially, you are in one of two conditions. You have somebody's boot on your neck, or you have your boot on somebody else's.

The government of Illinois [and its REAL capital, Chicago] is capricious, brutal, corrupt and profoundly incompetent. It's Zimbabwe with snow.

THAT is Obama's political heritage.

Hi Tecumseh,

The title of the thread makes it seem as if there is something wrong with porn. Is there?

Both firearms and pornography should not be to open access to children. However, neither should children be protected from the knowledge of their existance. Every gun shop I've been to the only way children were allowed in was with their parents. Having one next to a school should have no negative effects on the children. The only real effect I might see is having a supply of arms nearby to help stop a Columbine type situation happening.

Maybe Obama could coin the phrase, "Give me Liberty, or Give Me Porn". Listen, the sound of screeching tires..

Quoted for truth.

One point - considering that the porn-bookshops in Chicago are these featureless, non-descript bunkers with no windows to see inside, the shops themselves aren't the problem.

It's the creepy old scumbags who trundle in there.

Another point - children aren't supposed to have access to guns? What gun shop leaves loaded firearms in easy access of children? Even the knives are on display behind glass in the places I've been to from Utah to Illinois.

Does anyone have a link to any actual documentation of this proposed legislation?

Here is some additional information. He originally proposed this in 1999.

Obama and Gun Control: His record isn't likely to win back the rural "pro-gun" voters who've fled to the Republicans in recent years, likely costing Gore the election in 2000. From the Chicago Defender, Dec. 13, 1999:

Sweeping federal gun control legislation proposed by Sen. Barack Obama (D-13th) would increase the penalties on gun runners who are flooding Chicago's streets with illegal weapons.

At an anti-gun rally held at the Park Manor Christian Church, 600 E. 73rd St., headed by the Rev. James Demus, Obama also said he's backing a resolution being introduced into the City Council by Alds. Toni Preckwinkle (4th), Ted Thomas (15th), Leslie Hairston (5th) to call for a "shot-free" millennium celebration.

Obama outlined his anti-gun plan that includes increased penalties for the interstate transportation of firearms. The maximum penalty now for bringing a gun across the border is 10 years in prison. Obama is proposing to make it a felony for a gun owner whose firearm was stolen from his residence which causes harm to another person if that weapon was not securely stored in that home. [!!!]

He's proposing restricting gun purchases to one weapon a month and banning the sale of firearms at gun shows except for "antique" weapons. Obama is also proposing increasing the licensing fee to obtain a federal firearms license.

He's also seeking a ban on police agencies from reselling their used weapons even if those funds are used to buy more state-of-the-art weapons for their agencies. Obama wants only those over 21 who've passed a basic course to be able to buy or own a firearm.

He's proposing that all federally licensed gun dealers sell firearms in a storefront and not from their homes while banning their business from being within five miles of a school or a park. He's also banning the sale of 'junk" handguns like the popular Saturday Night Specials.

Obama is requiring that all people working at a gun dealer undergo a criminal background check. He's also asking that gun manufacturers be required to develop safety measures that permit only the original owner of the firearm to operate the weapon purchased.

Additionally, he wants an increase of the funds for schools to teach anger management skills for youth between the ages of 5-13. Obama is also seeking to increase the federal taxes by 500 percent on the sale of firearm, ammunition [sic] -- weapons he says are most commonly used in firearm deaths.

Let's face it, none of the candidates are pro-gun. At best we'll get fewer restrictions and at worst we'll see a flood of new legislation. As for Nader, did anyone else read his party platform the last time around? The man qoutes Karl Marx for cryin' out loud!! He's even more of a Socialist than Hitlary.

This really is a representation of my problem when I go into the voting both. Its nearly impossible to find a candidate to respects the entire bill of rights and believes in individual liberty. If I want a gun I'm a red neck, thug, or hot head looking to cause problems and there's a candidate who would love to imagine, suppose, and admit a problem with my 2nd amendment rights and brush the gun store off to some far corner of town. If I want some porn, I'm a creep, prone to harassing school children, or going to be running around the neighborhood flashing people and there's a candidate who would love to imagine, suppose, and admit there's a problem with pornography as free speech and would brush it off to some far corner of town.

Just remember that if you don't respect the entire bill of rights you can't get too upset when someone starts picking away at your favorite part.
