Just for the sake of argument...

Imagine the worst happens and all military-style semi auto-rifles are banned (heaven forbid) and Big Brother goes door to door and takes them all away. Let's assume that the Ruger Mini-14/30 and all surplus semi-auto rifles are included as well. Let's even go a step further and say the CMP is shut down and all ex-military rifles are banned, too, even bolt actions. Let's shy away from current common military calibers, especially .223/5.56, .308/7.62 and 7.62x39, as they are likely banned, too (ask the Aussies).

In fact, this is not far from the reality facing some folks around the world in, say, the Australia and parts of Europe, not to mention some localities in the USA.

So, if you had to defend home and country with an available new civilian long arm, any action, what would it be? Lets recognize that folks live in very different areas, so we'll have three categories and I'll start:

  • URBAN (meaning densely populated cities) - Any Marlin 1894 in .357/.38 or a Mossberg 500 12 ga shotgun
  • SUBURBAN (mix of populated areas and some open land) - Any Marlin 336 in .30-30 Winchester
  • RURAL (mostly open land) - Savage or other solid, common bolt-action rifle in .243 Winchester
In all cases, I'd take a medium frame double-action revolver, S&W or Ruger, as a sidearm but that's a debate for another thread. :)

So, let's hear those nomination!

If Illinois lawmakers get their way every longarm short of a single shot 20 guage shotgun with a 32" barrel will be illegal and even those must have each individual shotgun pellet in each and every shell serial numbered,,,,,,,,,,,,

No old milsurp turnbolts either, eh?

I'd have to say a pump action like a Rem 7615, or a levergun like a .30-30, or maybe a BLR in .243 win even. Wait, no the Rem 7615 is out - it's chambered in a .mil caliber.

I'll revise: Browning BAR or Remington 7400 in .243 win, first choice. In particular, I'd choose the BAR shorttrac as top choice. Remington 7600 (pump) in .243 win, second choice. Marlin 336 or Browning BLR, in .243 or .30-30 win, third choice.

You didn't rule out sporter semi-autos, which is why I chose it. As I understand the question, these are ruled out:
-"military-style" semi-autos
-milsurp guns, including turnbolts
-all "military calibers"

I would wager that if the gov't went so far as to start openly confiscating firearms, they wouldn't leave us with any kind of gun. At that point in time I'd say shoot the SOB's at the door and die free rather than waiting another couple years before they legislated your bolt-action/levergun choices as "assault weapons" or "WMD's" :cuss: If I woke up in your scenario I'd opt for a Savage or Remington bolt gun in 300WM, if you can't have capacity and rapid-firing capability, get something that will put a lot of distance between you and the enemy. You would also want to get out of the urban areas since the gov't never seems to enforce these gun bans against the gangbangers and welfare mongrels, and you can bet that the crime and homicide rates would spike within weeks of the confiscations being completed.

I would build myself an evil tactical lever rifle - a la Mad Ogre. But most likely with XS's new tri-rail forend for the 336 and an EOTech.

Personally, with the wider acceptance of CHPs over the past decade, and even a "sporting rifle" company making an AR-15 pattern rifle (didn't see THAT one comming), I don't see an all-out ban and confiscation happening anytime within my lifetime. BUT since this is hypothetical.

I'd have to go with the lever-action .30-30. Since I have the capabilities to "roll my own", I'd make 'em as hot as the gun would take 'em.

In this scenario, I'd wager .308 isn't since it is essentially military ammo (7.62 NATO). 7mm-08 should work nicely.

1) Lower U.S. colors from flag pole in front yard.
2) Raise red Jolly Roger in place.

I would say lower the US flag from the gov't buildings and put them away for safe keeping and raise up the hammer&sickle Soviet flag in its place :cuss:

For the sake of conversation:
Urban - Rem 760 gamemaster in any cartridge or a Ruger carbine in 44mag.

All else - Rem 700 in 7mm rem mag

In reality: Viva La Revolution

2) Raise red Jolly Roger in place.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

OK, this was a thought-experiment only, please everybody don't make it too political. I suppose a could have phrased it as, "You're trapped in Wal-Mart when the zombies strike, which guns do you use to defend yourself."

Oh, and I have to ask, why the RED Jolly Roger? Is that a nickname for the old Soviet flag, or am I missing something?

The red jolly roger was the one flag you, as a british sea captain, did NOT want to see. If pirate ships had the skull-n-crossbones jolly roger, it at least meant they would at least show SOME mercy. The straight blood-red flag meant that the pirates would rather all die than leave a single man on your brish ship alive.

So new it hasn't even come out yet:
LynxCarbineRifle-1.jpg
The Lynx Carbine in .280 Orion.
I designed it, I love it.
And yes, .280 Orion is a nonexistant caliber. Think .280 EM-2.

Someone mentioned the BAR (the civvie gun, not the M1918).
See? I get mad at people who don't read the entire thread, and here I am doing it!
:D:D
Well, in that case...
Hmmm...
I'd have to go with the Winchester Model 1895 Carbine in .30-06 with updated sights and a modified magwell for BAR magazines.
Bwahahahahaha!
Oh, man, that's been one of my dreams for years...
