So I am really wanting a 1911 and I have heard good things about the Rock Island guns and the price is right but I have one question. It comes with the fixed low profile machined sights I believe and I am unsure of how easy it will be to acquire the sights on this gun quickly for shooting. Do any of you guys have input on this. Is it an issue? I don't want to put huge sights on it and I like the clean look but am worried the sights will make it difficult to shoot in a situation where I need to be quick.

I don't know what sights are on an RIA but I have a S&W 1911 that has the Novak Low-Mount "carry" sights fixed. It is white dot front and two white dots on each side of the rear notch. I swapped 1911s with a guy who
had a nice SPringfield ARmory full size like mine last time at the range. His sights seemd to sit on top of the slide - he remarked "I like your sights better -

Novak offers their sight packages but the RIA may need machining to get them properly fitted if you go that route THe RIA sounds like a nice platform to build on for your prefs.

I think that you are talking about the original Govt. style sights.

Yes, they are a PITA compared to modern sights, but they've worked for almost 100 years of warfare & self defense.

You can have the slide dovetailed for modern sights down the road, but the gunsmith costs + sights (plus possible shipping charges if you want to send it away) are almost always going to cost more than if you purchased an upgraded model in the first place. You should weigh this when you comparison shop pistols.

If I went this route I would probably not spend the money to have the sights upgraded. Thats why I am trying to decide if its worth it to go with the better sights or if its worth it to save a little money. I believe the next step up in price range for better sights is the Taurus 1911

RIA makes a tac. model It has better sights and a few othe goodies. Look for one of them . I would buy a RIA before a T. I already have had experiance with the customer service . never again,

If you can buy the Tactical version for only $40-50 more, get it. The cost of gunsmithing the dovetails will be more than that -not including the sights. You also get a beavertail safety for the small difference as well.
