I didn't want to spend the money for tritium night sights. I bought a bottlle of glo-paint ("the world's brightest"), put on three layers and tested in the dark. The sights were great for five minutes and then began to fade quickly. Within fifteen minutes they were useless for many low light situations.

I will now spring for tritium. The problem is my 1911 has a staked front sight. The slide must be machined to receive the glowing tube. Bite the bullet and get her machined???

+1 for Ed at Vanden Berg Custom

I found a guy who did an absolutely wonderful job on mine here in Houston. I called around to a few different smiths and this guy was one of the ower priced and had the best turn around time. I didnt think he was going to need to machine my slide at all since I bought the same sights, but with tritium inserts. It turns out the tritium front side is longer so he machined my slide, rebeadblasted it and inserted the new sight. It looks like it was done at the factory.

I highly recommend Ed Vanden Berg Custom http://www.vandenbergcustom.com/

He was an absolute pleasure to deal with and specializes in 1911's, AR-15's, FAL's and anything Remington. He is located just South of Houston in Webster, TX.

Did you have adjustable sights on your 1911? Who made the sights that you put on the little darlin? I'm thinking about just going with tritium up front and leaving the adjustable rear sight alone. Was the fellow in Houston pretty reasonable on cost?

I had adjustable sights on before and bought adjustable tritium sights from
The same compa, Champion, now called Kensight. Van Den Berg was extremely reasonable on price. Give him a call.
