I'll be moving to Huntsville in a couple months, and would
appreciate some advice on which areas I should avoid.
(I figured, like any city, there must be some "bad" parts.)

Of course, I'd also appreciate some information on where the nice gun
shops/ranges are :)

Thanks.

I live in Huntsville (or just outside of). If I had to say which area to avoid (for living I assume) it would be small areas in the NW section of town. But there are really nice neighborhoods in the NW as well. And you know crime can and will occur in any part of town.

Personally I would look in Madison/Monrovia/Harvest area (this is where I live). Where (if you know) are you going to be working?

Welcome to the big small town of Huntsville. Most folks here haven't come to grips with the fact that Huntsville is a larger city now.

Problems can come anywhere in town. Few years back a kid took a hatchet to his parents and brothers and sisters in one of the nicer sections of town. There was even a TV movie about the wife who hired a handyman to kill her optometerist husband. Even had the main mall shut down one weekend a couple of years ago due to a running fight between a couple groups of kids. The real "bad" section of town is just off Governors Drive west of the parkway. Closest thing to a "red light district" you will find around here. Lost of the older sections of town that used to be problem areas are actually becoming nicer areas as home renovations occur. Five Points in the NE is an area that used to be run down, but now you can find a nicely renovated house next to a run down house. Even the old NE/NW areas that were the old areas to avoid can't really be called that as the city has spread, the outer NE/NW areas are really nice areas. So it's a real tossup.

As far as finding a place to live, alot would depend on where you work, and the local roads. The roads haven't keep pace with the growth here and rush hour is getting worse all the time. I'd check anywhere at rush to see what the traffic is like before I bought out there. Just to give you an idea, 1 year after I bought our house, they opened a new school (well moved from an old location to a new one) about 3 miles down from us. Traffic got so bad, you had to wait until someone blocking the cross road stopped to wave you out. It was only like that when school was in session. We finally had the 4 way stop causing the backup replaced with a light and things are better now. Of course our idea of rush hour is still probably laughable to most people.

Huntsville.

Naw, I'm just kidding. I don't know enough about Huntsville to tell you but welcome to God's country.

On a positive note, I lived in Harvest for four years and really liked the area. Not far from big name retail stores but fairly quiet. I would agree that there are areas on the NW side that I would not want to walk alone or at all. I drove through some of these areas to get to work. People walking often carried a club / cane / weapon of some kind. These were the average Joe citizen types.

Welcome to the area.
I live about 35 miles south of Huntsville, on Guntersville Lake (one of the country's top bass lakes, if you fish...or if you don't fish, for that matter). In addition to the Madison/Harvest suggestions above, I would add areas south of Monte Sano mountain as desirable locations. Highway 431 South from Hampton Cove to Owens Cross Roads is a good corridor.

As far as good gun shops, I've always had excellent service and fair prices at Larry's Pistol and Pawn on North Parkway. I just bought a Smith & Wesson MP 40c with night sights for my daughter at a great price, better than what I found on Gunbroker. The staff is especially good, very knowledgeable. They also have an indoor range. They're the best in the area, hands down.

Southeast of Huntsville, on Guntersville Lake at Langston, is Shootrite Academy, a top notch training facility...they are affiliated with Thunder Ranch and train military and SWAT personnel. Here is their site, including a listing of available classes.

Hope you have a good move; the place is kinda going crazy right now with the influx of people due to the BRAC changes.

You'll like it here; a lot of military personnel rotating through retire to the area.
