Good 45LC revolvers?

I can think of nothing better than a big, shiny, Ruger Blackhawk.

No question, my idea of a proper .45 Colt revolver is the S&W 625 Mountain Gun so chambered... I have two. I have owned a myriad of Rugers; Blackhawks, Bisley BH, Vaquero, .454 SRH, and a .45 RH. They are all gone - only the two MGs and a Puma 24" oct SS M1892 remain here in .45 Colt.

Shooting single action .45 Colts is fun - for a while. Eventually, you'll want it to go bang when you just squeeze the trigger. The S&W 625 MG in .45 Colt is the most fun there - for me. YMMV.

My first S&W, an '01 625MG - with square-conversion fg cocobolo Ahrends grips. That's an HKS #25-5 speedloader with Speer 250gr Gold Dots. The knife is a Buck #408 Kalinga Pro in S30V.

I like my USFA SAA in .45lc.

Ruger Blackhawk with a Bisley grip. Reload and you can shoot anything from cowboy loads up to levels that will take anything on the NA continent.

That would be a hijack.

45 Colt is still available in a wide variety of revolvers.
In the past, companies like Taurus made a short nose 45 lc revolver. Ruger's old model Vaqueros were available in 45.
There a a bunch of them on the used market in addition to the great choices already mentioned.

Comparatively inexpensive, it's hard to go wrong with a Ruger Blackhawk.

DA or SA? I'm a blackhawk fan. I have no use for a DA gun in .45 Colt. It's an outdoor caliber, not a concealed carry. I don't shoot DA at 100 yards. Other than a Redhawk, the Blackhawk can handle loads a DA (like a Smith) can't. I load this thing hot for hunting hogs. A big hog takes a good bit of killin'.

That would be the Ruger Vaquero.

Yes, the fixed sight version is call 'Vaquero'. Keep in mind the Vaquero on the market now has the new mid-size frame and will not shoot those .45+P+ loads.
If you want those kind of loads, look for an older model. The older model and the Blackhawk are built on the same frame.

Dan Wesson made an outstanding .45 Colt double action but they are hard to find. They'll handle any loads the Blackhawk can handle. Short of that, find a .44 Mag and have it rechambered.

Too many options. You need to narrow it down some.

I hear Freedom Arms 45's are pretty good.

There are quite a few good 45 Colt guns
One of the best, is a S&W 25 followed by a 625.
Another of the strongest is a Ruger Blackhawk and all of its variations including the Vaquaros
Some great guns are the copies of the Colt SAA with the USFA one of the best of these, this will also include the Ruger "New Model"


A great gun in 45 Colt is the Taurus Tracker. It is just big enough to hold 5 45 Colts and will handle the Colt 45 in its original form very well and can handle some warmer loads in moderation.

My preference is S&W 25-5, Ruger "Bisley" and FA mod. 97.

I own a Ruger Blackhawk in 45Colt aka long colt. Mine was bought NIB, is a new model one bought between 1998 and 2001. I love this gun!

I have to disagree with you about the .45 Long Colt and concealed carry. Mine was a Colt New Service for years. I finally retired it for a S&W Mountain Gun in S/S. There was something about my life depending on a 87 year old gun, even if it is a Colt.

My defense loads were Winchester Silvertips but are now Buffalo Bore 255 grain soft lead wadcutter type bullet moving about 900 fps out a 4 inch barrel. Is there anything about this cartrdige that a .45 Auto Rim or ACP in clips could not do? Probably not. I do like the larger bullet weight in the Colt.

I know a few others who carry .45 Colt concealed, including SA. It is just a matter of taste and confidence.

I really dont ever recall seeing a bad .45LC revolver out of ones that idiots have attacked with tools they had no clue on how to operate.

I'm another one who's had a lot of fun shooting a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt.
