A friend and I will be driving up to Fort Thompson South Dakota on Thursday and will be we working with the Indian Health Service on the Crow Creek Indian Reservation for about a month. We'd like to bring our handguns with us for obvious reasons. Since I don’t believe we will be able to keep them at our place on the Indian reservation we’d like to drop them off at a local gun shop during the week and then pick them up for weekend exploration.

Does anyone know of a good gun shop where we can do this? I don’t want to drop the guns off on Monday and then come back on Friday to hear: “what guns?” … “Get out of my store!!!” :banghead:

Dan, why can't you take your handguns onto the reservation, thats probably where you will need them the most. PS: I spent my time on a res working and being threatened enough to know. Retired PHS now.
 
I don't think you'll have a problem keeping your guns with you, but if you can't try Teton river traders @ 1 800 881 1371. I don't know if they will keep guns, but I know there good people.
 
Well I haven’t been able to find any clear answer as to if firearms are aloud on the reservation. Also, I am with the Indian Health Service which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. I doubt they really want anyone having guns in student housing. This is also considered to be one of my school rotations although the housing I believe is part of the reservation.

I have heard the people on the reservation and in town can get out of control. Buffalo County where we are staying has a per capita of just over $5,000 making it the poorest county in the country. I would love to have my gun with me but I don’t want to risk the last 7 years of college for having a gun in the wrong place.

Here's the relevant text:

23-7-8.1. The form of the permit to carry a concealed pistol shall be prescribed by the secretary of state pursuant to § 23-7-8. The permit shall list the applicant's name, address, and the expiration date of the permit. Any permit issued after July 1, 2003, shall include a color photograph and signature of the permit holder. The holder of a permit may carry a concealed pistol anywhere in South Dakota except in any licensed on-sale malt beverage or alcoholic beverage establishment that derives over one-half of its total income from the sale of malt or alcoholic beverages. Nothing in this section prevents law enforcement officers, security guards employed on the premises, and other public officials with the written permission of the sheriff from carrying concealed weapons in the performance of their duties or prevents home or business owners from carrying concealed weapons on their property pursuant to § 22-14-11.

If you have a Florida carry permit then you're covered in South Dakota. Open carry is allowed without a permit.

I would call the Crow Creek tribal police and ask.

The tribal governments have their own laws and normally will not bother you if you are only passing through on the main highways. They do not recognize alot of state or federal laws. You cannot have any weapons in the Indian casinos.

I'd carry and not advertise it. If thats too risky, being with health services should keep you in good standing. Some of the people/areas can be rough. I have sd permit and i think fl is recognized. As stated tribes have their own laws. You could ask tribal police their rules,but don't trust them with your weapons.
Maybe Pierre police,sheriff dept could help, email them on where to store weapons.
A .22 lr rifle might be fun on a day off.
 
I’m really not too worried about my safety while on the reservation, I’m primarily concerned with the drive form Florida and having it for weekends when I explore the surrounding areas.

I know it looks like open carry is legal but will it get me hassled? I would be carrying a Glock 20 in a Blackhawk holster. Although legal, could this get me detained for a couple hours walking around in the cities with a gun on my hip?

Teton River is a good place and they will do right by you.

I do think a call to the Crow Creek PD might save you some concern. The tribal court number is (605) 245-2325 and they should be able to transfer you or let you know the number to call for the public safety office.

You will not want to attract a lot of attention on the reservation, as there are some predators there as everywhere else. Mostly just good folks trying to make a living, but some depressed areas as well.
 
Thanks, Rust Collector: I talked with the Crow Creek PD and they said that it was fine with them but I would have to check with the IHS if I am staying in one of their buildings. I guess I’ll just have to see where I’m staying when I get there. If it’s on reservation property I’m fine. If not I guess the guns are staying at Teton River Traders.
