I have an oppritunity to buy an American Made Mosin. Stamped American, New England Westinghouse. 7.62.

It has been altered by adding a Monte Carlo stock. I really don't need the thing, but could be a fun shooter.

What do you think?

At an auction earlier this year, a Remington contract Mosin in good shape, 10x the typical import condition, went for about $450.00 IIRC

It's considered pretty rare (9/10), but I don't know how the stock affects the price. I might be tempted to pick it up, especially if the one change you need to get it back to normal is pick up a new stock.

if the metal is in original condition as in no drilling for scope and the barrel is correct length it's certainly worth picking up as a restoration project

just don't expect to find an original NEW stock for it... you will likely have to settle for a russian made M91 stock

I was just looking at a Remington Mosin this weekend that was in practically new condition. It was a "drill rifle" and had the sights milled off and no firing pin but was otherwise complete and ready to go. The seller says it should function fine with the addition of a firing pin although it would be a bit difficult to aim. If I remember he was asking $325 which didn't seem too outrageous.... any idea if that would be a decent price? I don't know what could be done for sights short of drilling/tapping it to attach a scope.

the thing would have to have a firing pin to hold the bolt together... hoever the pin might have been clipped

as far as the sights if the sight bases are intact that could be repaired easily

to be honest i need more info as to how the sights were "milled off"

Is that all? If the barrel, bolt, sights, etc. are unchanged it's not too difficult to track down an M91 stock as a replacement. Maybe even a black walnut one.

I don't know about that price, but I have heard that these were in fact US government mods dating back before WWII. If so the "hacks" are themselves historical. I'd check for US flaming bomb stamps or garrison marks and if you find them you might consider snatching it as a nice piece of history.

This fellow has his listed (unsold) at $295

The Remington and Westinghouse Mosins were not imports that were restamped. These rifles were build in the USA and sold/leased to the Russians who were at war with the Germans. They run a bit more than the Russian mosins and most found are very tired and used they are however an interesting part of American firearms history. The American Mosins likely went right to the hands of Russian battle troops.

not all american made mosins made it to russia

quite a few found their way into various national guard units some were sent along with the troops sent to russia in 1918 (most if not all of these mosins were left behind when the troops returned home)

the rest of them ended up being sold to civilians... the majority of bannermans are US manufacture mosins

That is pretty much the rifle I saw, but it was in new condition.

$150 is a steal as long as the only change is a new stock, and no metal has been removed. Buy it.

even if it's not a wood stock if the barrel hasn't been chopped and it hasn't been drilled or reblued it would be worth up to $200 as a restoration project...
